    Painting center console

My car is a 64 with dark blue interior.

I have primer, dark blue dye and satin clear coat from Corvette America all in spray cans. I've used the dye to touch up a few small chips on my center console. The color matches perfectly but the gloss level is different where I touched it up. The areas I painted are flatter looking than the areas I did not. I'd like to make it look uniform and correct.

I'm either going to strip and repaint the whole thing or just spray clear coat over the existing paint/dye.

Should the center console paint be flat or slightly glossy? It may be subjective but I'm wondering if it should be just blue dye or should it be topped with the satin clear coat?

I've read posts saying to use primer and others saying to just apply a couple thin coats of dye so the grain doesn't wash out. If I strip it and start over should I use primer or not?

I'm thinking I'll mask it and spray the clear coat first and see if that does it. If not I'll strip it and start over.

    Suggestions????

      Re: Painting center console

Hey guys. I want to re-paint my center console and got these numbers from Eklers website:

      Dupont R-M Ditzler
      Flat 4430-L. 63B22. DIA 12-754
      *Gloss 96221 N/a Dl12923

      and this: https://www.autocolorlibrary.com/pag...HorizontalTab3

      12740 Dtizler

My local PPG dealer has body color chips and formulas goign back to the 50's and he mixed paint correctly for me.

Any suggestions on an altenative? I live in Hawaii and and the hazmat fee to ship to me is $130, Shipping $70 or more, paint $101. The guy that can mix it suggested I ship to someone on the mainland and have that guy ship it via flat rate USPS but I don't know who would do that and that's a bit iffy.

Any suggestions? I'm in the printing business and we use the PMS book (Pantone matching system) which has a zillion shades of evrey color and I'm pretty sure they have a match or close on for most corvette colors (san's the metalic ingredients). I wish we used that as at least a general reference.

      Info would be much appreciated!
      Nick

I have a 64 convertible - originally Riverside red with black carpets - my console has wood-grain inlay rather than paint. Can anyone tell me about this - was it an option vs. painted inlay? The sides of the inlay are weathered, and I need to freshen up. Any suggestions?

I know this thread is a couple years old but wanted to address the concern about primer lessening the texture. I refinished the shift console in my '72 a couple summers ago and was concerned about the texture there too. I sprayed a couple light coats of standard primer (not high-build) and topped with SEM Trim Black. I'd say the paint seemed more likely to fill the texture given its viscosity than the primer did, but a couple coats later didn't show anything like that. I suppose once the volatiles evaporate, the volume of what came out of the can is greatly diminished.

Thanks Keith - interesting what some people do back in the day. I peeled off the wood looking vinyl - looks like same stuff people put on the bottom of drawers back in the day. Where the black butts up against the chrome - there is a slight channel - was that channel depression left chrome, or was it filled with paint. Make sense?
