A bit off topic- '66 coupe with ZZ4 starting issue

Any thoughts as to where else to look? Any chance the VR is causing the lag? Once the engine is warm, it starts right up with no lag most of the time and once started the engine runs fine.

Thanks for your thoughts on this. Garry Barnes

    Gary,
There are probably a few not-mentioned items that can afftect this.
    Ignition type
    Fuel injection or carbureted
    Fuel pump tank or engine

could be more items to clarify type

FWIW, would this post be "off topic" if the NCRS now has a "Concours" class?

"...when you turn the key there is an audible sound that tells you it is going to start, it then goes totally silent and then all of a sudden it turns over and starts. There is very little if any typical cranking sounds."

Can you describe this in more detail? What type of audible sound? Is this audible sound the same as the sound when it later turns over? How do these sounds differ from "typical cranking sounds"?

You have a ZZ4 with a Holley carburetor and HEI ignition with VAC. Is this correct? Does it have an OEM style starter, or something different like an aftermarket reduction gear starter?

The sound is best described as a low churn that lasts about two to three times and then a split second moment of silence and then it starts. You are correct on the carb, distributor with VAC. I need to investigate the starter, but can I can say that I have looked at it and I don't believe it is an OEM starter. Need to look closer.

I am almost thinking that the cranking amps have depleted in this unknown aged battery. It still reads 12 volts, but it sounds like a battery that is having a hard time exerting enough energy to turn the engine over. What I can't explain is why or how it has started every time...eventually.
