Re: Advice on swapping power steering valve and cylinder 1965 327 convertible
It's a straight forward job. Pay attention to proper cris-crossing of the lines at the valve. Check that hoses don't touch or interfere with anything while a helper turns the wheel lock to lock. And follow directions for bleeding the system.
It can get messy; work over a large drip pan while draining the system.Mark Edmondson

John I just put a power sterring pump in my 67 be sure to have a flare wrench and a good open end wrench. Cheap wrenches tend to be fatter and more difficult to get into the cylinder area for the hose fittings- Top

First loosen the nut that tightens it to the pitman arm, clean the slots (that tighten), then lube the slot. Then I used a large box end wrench on the shaft that went into the linkage and unscrewed it. Good luck, Don H.- Top

Re: Advice on swapping power steering valve and cylinder 1965 327 convertible
John...About 2 years ago my PSCV was leaking on my 65 327. I bought a rebuild kit and rebuilt the valve myself. It was very straightforward and so far no leaks. The control valve seems to be the weak link in the system. If you search the achieves there are very detailed instructions on how to do it. The hardest part of the job for me was getting the valve off the Pittman arm. I hope this helps.

What did you use to separate the valve from the Pittman arm? And does the new ( or rebuilt ) valve slide back into the Pittman arm easily? I see it is tapered.- Top

I used a pickle fork. It took some time to get the fork positioned due to tight quarters and the angle needed. The valve back on the Pittman was easy.- Top

Re: Advice on swapping power steering valve and cylinder 1965 327 convertible
Got it Thanks
Followup on the valve and cylinder swap: went well, The Harbor Freight 3/4 inch ball joint tool worked great to remove valve from Pittman arm.. Highly recommended. System works well and operates quietly-no leaks.
Another question: I counted the turns when I replaced the valve. I repeated the installation turns in reverse.
Now I note that my steering wheel is rotated about 5-10 degrees left of 12 o'clock when the wheels are straight as I drive a straightaway. I have the shop manual, but I am not sure if the installation resulted in the cant of the wheel to the left of 12 oclock, or just a coincidence. .
Thoughts on this?- Top

Re: Advice on swapping power steering valve and cylinder 1965 327 convertible
John, did you adjust the valve balancing (nut) located under the big round cap after installation? If not, that might account for the steering wheel offset, as the P/S unit is trying to pull the relay rod in one direction and you need to compensate with the steering wheel.Bill Bertelli

I did not, and was wondering whether that could be a factor.- Top
