          Hi Ara,

I have all the visors, mirror and garnish moldings off back to the halo panel...

Don't know if you remember, but does the halo panel have to be completely removed to get the headliner out?
Or, will the headliner slip out toward the front of the car if you loosen all the halo screws...?

          thanks!
          thx,
          Mark

In 63 the headliner was about 3/8 compacted fibrous sound deadener covered with the very thin fiberglass mesh. The mesh was then dye sprayed interior color. Over time as the liner aged, as soon as you touched it you damaged it. This is probably the reason for the harder plastic and what Al Knoch supplies today.
Thanks much, Harry...interesting and that's good to know...
I have redone headliners in a '38 Ford and a '50 Chevy (the old metal curved bow through a cloth loop style)...
I knew that design for headliners was long gone, but the hard black plastic did kinda throw me a little when I got it out.

The longitudinal dark lines running front to back on the white side of the vinyl make me think the foam was first glued (adhered?) to the vinyl and then passed under some sort of a roller(s)? - and then that sandwiched vinyl/foam was glued to the black plastic...all speculation on my part...
                      thx,
                      Mark

Mark, I pulled the old headliner from the attic. I kept it and the original vinyl in case I wanted to re-glue it. It seems that the original backer board is multi-layer. It has thick paper on both sides and maybe foam in the center. It measures about 1/8" thich. It must have been cured in a mold since it has sun visor depressions. I also attached photos of both sides the original vinyl. Hope this helps.
                              Rocco, thanks so much!

Yes this helps a lot, but it also opens up more questions in my mind about my plastic backing board.
Obviously, mine looks nothing like yours - and if it was replaced, it had to be 23+ years ago (Sept 1998 or earlier) when my car would have been 31 years old (odd in my mind?).

Anyhow, the back of my vinyl looks similar to yours...see photos below...
I used a vegetable bristle brush and gently scraped off the foam residue...the top stuff comes off easily, but it sticks harder to the vinyl when you get down to the base vinyl material - it doesn't come off that easily...

and BTW - the foam on my backer leaves almost no debris when I brush over it...so it appears the foam itself failed...It doesn't look like the adhesive from either the vinyl to the foam, or the foam to the backer failed...

the grain in the front of my vinyl looks a little different than yours, but that could just be the shot angle, lighting, or whatever...

I really appreciate your efforts digging out your stuff and providing me your photos!
