    67 BB alternator question

The alternator on my 67 Big Block with P/S does not have a lock washer behind the assembly nut, is this correct? I thought all alternators used a lock washer.
Also there is a flat washer spacer between the pulley and alternator fan blade. Is this correct as well?

I am not familiar with Big Blocks with power steering.

    Thank you.

In the '67 AIM, UPC L36, A3 shows a lock washer installed.

Sorry, perhaps I was not clear about which lock washer. I meant the the lock washer behind the nut holding the pulley on the alternator shaft. My alternator does not have a lock washer behind the pulley nut.
I also have a flat washer between the pulley and the fan blade which I don't is correct.

The previous owner changed the pulley and I think he assembled the pulley incorrectly.

        Lorne------

No washer between the fan blade and pulley. The pulley is retained to the shaft by a "wave" washer, GM #1941978, and a special nut, GM #1915172. The washer is discontinued. The nut remains available.

When the assembly is mounted and the nut torqued, the washer appears as a flat washer since it is compressed.

By the way, a washer between the pulley and the fan might be necessary if an incorrect pulley is being used.

          Thanks Joe,

That is the information I needed. I will check with some of the Corvette aftermarket retailers to see if I can find a wave washer since GM no longer carries them.

I believe there should be a lock washer behind the nut, I have a 427/400 with P/S and there is a lock washer.

There is a lock washer behind the nut. It's the "wave" washer I described above. The "wave" produces a "spring-like" locking action.

If you're referring to a split lockwasher, I do not believe they were originally used. However, they are the type usually supplied with rebuilt alternators (or, field installed by folks that lost the original washer).

                Lorne,

NOS GM 1941978 wave washers show up on eBay. Search for them there. Not cheap, but the real deal.
