thanks for info on solving my gauge problem(gas and temp) turned out that it was a loose wire problem on the ignition harness plug. brown wire was suspect.
wiper problem is the next weird one. when i was running the car at the same time the gauge problem showed up, a rain shower cranked up(florida). i tuned the wipers on and they ran for about 10 minutes and stopped in mid travel. the wiper motor was rebuilt and this was the first time i turned it on. i think the offset arms might be jammed, but as usual, i'm probably wrong. any suggestions will be appreciated by me and the car.

Richard, check the electrical connection at the wiper motor, might have shaken loose, good luck,

good suggestion. i should have thought of that, seeing as how that what bit me on the gauge problem. i'll do that before trying to get at the arms that drive the blades.
