Value Range reuniting Original Numbers Match 1966 427 435 engine and Documentation

The original Owner of a 1966 Corvette 427/425 HP removed the engine when he sold it in 1968 for reasons the buyer did not want the maintenance with a solid lifter car. He retained the engine and all Documentation ever since. He has been contacted through the info on Corvette Registry by the current owner of the car interested in reuniting the car and engine. He would like advice on how to value the package of Numbers Matching Original 427/425 and Documentation by understanding what does bring them all back together do to the value of the car.

low mile professionally stored 427 /425 HP and all original order documentation (delivery bookwork, protector plate and window sticker)

What Value impact would it be to a restored 1966 Corvette to reunite it to its Original and Numbers Matching Engine with all Documentation from the Original Owner do the value of a frame off restored car?

    Restored 1966 Car - NOM (454) no Documentation - $ Value Range
Restored 1966 Car - Original numbers matching 427/425 HP engine with all Documentation from Original Owner - $ Value Range

Trying to support Original Owner in assessing fair value so all parties benefit.

    Hi Mark,

While I fully embrace reuniting "original" configurations for any corvette, I don't think the TDB is the place for determining "market value" of corvettes (or parts thereof) that have no documentation presented in the TDB post you have provided...:
    no photos
    no Trim Plate
    no VIN Plate
    no Engine Pad Stampings
no photos of the car in question...

    others probably have differing opinions...
    thx,
    Mark

      Mark

Agree with Mark Francis' comments below.

But here is an assessment from a different perspective. Given current owner's engine will need a complete rebuild, I would basically value it at typical salvage yard price for a correct casting number/casting date engine that had NOT been decked.

NCRS Top Flight restoration judging has 4500 points total. Of those 4500 points, 50 points total are assigned to engine case Assembly Date and VIN stamps (25 points each).

So your unknown delta cost boils down to what someone is willing to pay to gain 50 NCRS points (about 1%). Add that value to cost of a junkyard engine and you have a price.

This stuff only matters to the NCRS crowd - many folks seem happy to stuff a LS into their car and press on.

      Dave

A better description of the car, colors, condition and options would help. Black is more valuable than green and sidepipes add additional value, also. If you start checking off all the rare colors and options, the car could multiply in value. The paperwork, if legitimate, helps also.

The parts to put together a 427-425 would cost at least $10,000, and most Corvette collectors would pay $3000 to get the car's original documentation. If the car is still pretty original in other aspects, and the owner desires originality, most owners would jump on this deal if they have the disposable cash. However, if the engine owner thinks he hit the jackpot and wants way more than $15,000, or the car owner is a dealer looking for a quick flip, that changes the equation. The car owner in this story apparently was very interested in researching the history of the car to see if it was a real 427-425. Finding that the car was real is usually the greatest outcome for this kind of search. Finding the actual engine and (!) documentation is unbelievably good luck. Now the guy has cold feet---what's going on here?

If I was in the position of the original owner, I would support reunification of engine with car by offering it for a nominal price. Maybe the value of rebuildable core as suggested earlier.

I trust we're not using this forum as leverage to extract the maximum price for the engine.

Thanks Mark, Your probably right this isn't probably the right place to try to assess how the Original Owner should respond to the current owner of the car. He clearly had a passion for the car as he retained as I wish all owners did, all original documentation and purchase material as well as the engine for 53 years hope to find the car and purchase it to put everything back together.

I will look to see if I can delete the post.

                  Thanks David,

I understand your points as I just worked with my car to earn a Chapter Top Flight this summer and really assessed all investments to get there through implementing the method you talk to. I haven't heard either party, the current owner of the car or the original owner with the Documentation and Engine express interest beyond a mutual interest of bringing the car back together with original engine and documentation. Unfortunately neither engaged in tracking down information with the interest of selling their part of the equation so trying to figure a fair deal for both and one of them ending up with the car is their mutual goal.

                  Thanks

In the last month I purchased a 66 425 HP block that was in a car built 432 cars before my car. You lose 25 points for VIN derivitive, I can accept that.

                      Thanks Patrick

The Original Owner with the Documentation and Engine in hopes of finding and buying the Car listed it under its VIN in the Corvette Registry several years ago, in hopes of finding the car, with and owner interested in someday selling the car, buying it to put it back together. After keeping the Documentation and Engine for over 50 years it means enough to him he is was not motivated for sale for profit sell his parts.

The Current Owner of the Car is just starting a Restoration and heard of the Corvette Registry in hope the Car was listed and find possible historical information on the Car. He called and was surprised to be connected to the Original Owner let alone all documentation and the original Engine. He is not a interested in selling the Car.

Both have a real Corvette passion that would like to reunit the Car. With that mutual interest now is the process of how do they treat each other fairly.

Thanks and I am sorry again this is probably not the right place to try to assess options for them here. I want to respond to everyone before terminating the post.

                        Thanks Tim,

You are correct unfair request with out the detail. I could provide all from Original window Sticker, but with the feedback, that I understand and agree with, that this isn't the place to ask for such information I hate to take it a step deeper.

If you would like to talk about it off line we could figure out an opportunity to talk. The quick summary it was a very highly optioned Milano Maroon with Black Leather and Teak Steering Wheel Side Exhaust, Quick Take Off Wheels, Special Suspension F41.

                        Thanks again

The Original Owner, with the Documentation and Engine, in hopes of finding and buying the Car, listed it under its VIN in the Corvette Registry several years ago, listing his Phone Number in comments section. Thanks Mike,

I agree with you and appreciate the change NCRS has made over the years with point deductions to reduce incentive for re-stamping engine pads. The current owner was aware his car was not original event though the Engine pad is currently stamped with the correct numbers. He is thoughtful enough in his research that the Block cast date, and the stamp pad don't line up with the Car.

I do not know everyone's intention with the car, but neither party has mentioned NCRS or having the Car Judged. I know the Original Owners only has motivation is for hopefully repurchasing the car and originality, re-uniting the car with its Documentation and original engine. Conversations with the Current Owner seem consistent with that.

                              Thanks
