1973 non AC heater control light

My 73 non AC heater control barely lights up. I see from AIM it's a 1816 bulb. So, is there only one bulb in that area and if working properly is it just not designed to light up well? Asking before I unbolt things and just a waste of effort. Tks. Doug

Just one bulb and it does not well light the display.

Thanks Joe. Just checked in dark garage and it's barely any light. I'll check it out, must be not aligned correctly. Do I just pull the shifter plate, 4 speed, to get to it? And would an equivalent LED bulb be better than a regular 1816? Doug 611i8KxpsoL._AC_SX569_.jpg

In a dark garage it should show up well.

Doug I have seen those smaller dash bulbs the glass turns black with age and the poorly lights anything. That maybe the case for you.

Ok, now where or exactly how do I find and change bulb. Do I have to disassemble heater control unit?20220106_124748.jpg

Carefully wiggle and lift the control unit upwards. The bulb is on the bottom. You should be able to get enough clearance to get to it.

Thanks Russ, I did find it now and put in an 1816 bulb. It had an old 1895 bulb and barely lit up. I'll take a picture tonight in the dark garage to see how it looks. Probably not very bright but it just drove me crazy as it was. My wife is probably right that I'm just not normal! Doug

Ok, picture of heater control lit up with a new 1816 bulb. Much brighter than before but as others have stated nothing to write home about. Doug 20220106_175204.jpg
