    '54 Wiper/washer system

I have the push button washer system. The switch has two ports. Which one connects to the washer bottle and which one connects to the wiper vacuum line. Thanks.

My suggestion is to experiment to find out.

Or Give Jay Maxwell a call at Capital Auto Restorations in Maryland.
Someone here will have the number - I've misplaced it apparently.

The way I see it you have a 50-50 chance of getting it right the first try. If it doesn't work switch the hoses and be done with it.

          Troy & Frank
Thanks for your response. I know it's a 50/50 chance, I tried it but still doesn't work. I obviously have a problem and I'm trying to determine if it's the switch that's faulty. My next step is to test the switch. If that doesn't work I will have to look deeper.

            Those switches are problematic.

It may not be the switch. You'll need good vacuum to make the washer work. Is the diaphragm in the dual action fuel pump ok? Is the hard piping correct? Make sure all your hoses that provide the vacuum are connected correctly. Also are you confident your washer jar pump works correctly? You can test that with a hand operated vacuum pump.

If you acquire other switches you can test the washer ops without going to the trouble of fully installing the switch and cable. Just hold it under the dash, plug in the hoses, start the car, and push the button. You don't need the wipers working.

Apply vacuum to the center fitting That should activate the piston that pumps fluid. If not pump need TLC

I test mine with a small vacume pump - cheap and easy to buy
I can run the wipers and washers without the engine
As above you do need quite a bit of vac to run the system
If you connect them backwards - washer fluid will be sucked into the intake and you will notice the engine running poorly
Try a vac pump - you can buy them off Amazon
I will look under the dash on the 1954's I have here.
Back in the day I had a diagram from John Rohner - see if I can find it

Yes a diagram would definitely help. I have access to a vac pump that is used in the heating AC business. How much vacuum do I need? I have quite a bit of the car disassembled so I can't run it now. The fuel pump was re-built so it shouldn't be a problem. If I use the vac pump should I connect it to the hose from the hard line? I also have a hand pump so I can test the bottle. All help is appreciated. Thanks again.

Brian - I think the min vac is 14" - dont quote me - I can ask Jay Maxwell - He told me one time
I am sure 18" will work fine
I connect right to the line or "T" at the back of the engine - so I simulate engine vac.
                      I hope this helps
                      Works great for me !

                        Chris:
I will try that on Saturday that's when my buddy who has the vac pump will be here. Again thanks to all who responded. Much appreciated.
