I'm rebuilding the instrument cluster on my '67, and the odometer stopped years ago at 43.000 miles! Question: what are the likely cause(s)?

Bill
welcome to the TDB.
Note the box below your thread marked Similar Threads,
The bottom Thread from back in ancient times, Post two by Jack Humphrey explains what happens to cause ODO meters to foul up.
Any speedo repair shop can repair your instrument, after you remove it from the cluster and send to them.
Here is the link to that old thread ---->

Re: C2 Odometer failure: Causes?
As Don said...Welcome to the TDB, Bill. Have you ever had the 'pleasure' of pulling a midyear instrument cluster before? It's most definitely doable but you'll feel like you just stripped the car down to parade rest. Lotsa old threads here and on the Corvette Forum, with pics, about how to go about that task. The reason I say it can be a large job sorta depends on what you need one. Most times, besides the odometer gears being replaced, the cluster housing and parts need to be repainted,, lenses cleaned, bulbs replaced, etc. And, in my case, it was the right time to also pull the steering column for a freshen up which made moving the cluster in and out much easier. Unfortunately, not a lot of speedo repair shops around anymore but there are a number of businesses that will do the task for you. There's also some folks here on the TDB that are very good at repairing clusters, one of them is an NCRS member from Arkansas, Joe Ray. He advertises in the Driveline as well.
Good luck,Mike T. - Prescott AZ.- Top

Good luck,
I pulled and reinstalled the cluster after changing all the burnt out bulbs many years back, but the tachometer and odometer worked then. Recently 1st the odometer broke and then the tachometer got flaky so I pulled the cluster, the drivers seat & the steering column. I've ordered parts to refurbish the cluster, but haven't found why the odometer doesn't work! the visible gears seem OK.- Top

Re: C2 Odometer failure: Causes?
William,
Check the "sticky" threads at the top of the Tech forum page - look for a thread titled "data base of restoration documents" --- lots of great how-to documents in there, including a few on pulling, restoring and reinstalling C2 clusters - as I recall, at least one of them has some tips on fixing a non functional odometer.Ed- Top

Re: C2 Odometer failure: Causes?
First, welcome to the NCRS - Being new to the organization this might help you. A MAC chapter member / friend (Don Harris) clued me in on a great search capability that I have found to be extremely helpful. If you put a part # in the Tech Forum search field you are highly likely to find a lot of posts on that particular part or assembly. Over the years just about every part for every year of C1 & C2 has been discussed in sometimes excruciating detail. It helps if you have and AIM - which includes just about every P/N for any C2. This search feature really comes in handy when you are looking for specs / finishes on fasteners and small parts.Ed- Top

Re: C2 Odometer failure: Causes?
After two cluster pulls over the years, I designed a bracket to hold the trip meter reset button in permanent reset position...this takes a significant load off the odometer drive train and prolongs the life; several others have done the same.... Some estimate it reduces the odometer drive train load 40% or more, but who knows. This particular bracket only works on 63 - 66 cars (so it won't help the OP here). If your reset knob is like the one in the video a similar bracket should work for you.
I have 14 of the bracketrs left, not selling them but if anybody wants one for the price of shipping, PM me..
You can make your own...
