    1956 Rear Spring Replacement

Looking to replace my rear springs on my 56 and wondering who makes or sells the best replacement springs for correct ride height. I realize that replacements are not the same looking as originals. Mine were 4 leaf originally from the best I can figure as they had been changed and modified.

      Re: 1956 Rar Spring Replacement

I had my original 4 leaf grooved springs for my 1957 redone by Eaton in Detroit. They anneal, arch, austenitize, temper and shot peen. This is just like the original springs were made. They asked what ride height I wanted and I requested stock height. When installed, they were 1" below the nominal spec that is in the AIM and JM. If the front is at correct ride height, the door sill plate will be level with the ground.

No one offers grooved new springs. The strip stock is no longer forged. Regardless of what any spring supplier says, stock height is dependent on many variables. For example, the spring front hanger bracket is higher in a 1956.
I am pleased with the overall results. If I had to do it again, I would request 1" above stock height. One of my next projects is to add some arch to these springs.

You may want to get your originals redone? Are they the correct PN and date?

I have a couple of original springs, dates are not quite correct but not sure if they are good enough to rebuild. I am contemplating just buying new ones fromCC or Paragon or??

I thought that my original springs were way beyond repair, due to someone having a trailer hitch on my 61. I brought them in to see if they could be fixed; and I was amazed at the way they came out. You might want to try this before you buy new ones. As long as they are grooved correct C1 springs, the numbers are not that easy to see for judging. You might be surprised what the spring rebuilders can do.
