Yes, it was definitely not stored well. However, the area above the timing cover as well as areas on the bellhousing flange appear to have suffered oil leakage. I can see no reason that any sort of storage issue would have caused this.

By the way, this engine assembly, GM #3965748, was discontinued without supersession in July, 1973. At that time its GM list price was $865.45

Well, th 3972110 manifold must have been manufactured both with and without the oil filler machined orifice. I have seen many of these manifolds which did have the machined orifice and I believe the manifold on the pictured engine is one of them. In addition, the GM blueprint for this manifold specifies the orifice to be machined.

However, I have never seen an example of the 71-72 manifold, GM #3959594, with a machined orifice and the blueprint does not specify it.
Joe— My 70 LT-1 is a late 70 car, but I have had it for 50 years and have paid attention to other 70 LT-1’s at every opportunity, and I have never seen one with a machined and plugged oil filler hole. I am sure there are other owners of earlier 70 LT-1’s on this board who can report whether there was a running change. The only plugged manifolds I have seen were on Z28 Camaros and I do not think they were 3972110. Perhaps only the 3972110 manifolds made for service had the machined and plugged hole.

          Hi Patrick,

I know first-hand that the 116 manifold had the oil fill hole and the threaded water outlet ports on the front left and right sides. How do I know? When I was young and foolish and attended Carlisle 25 years ago, I bought what I thought was a 110 manifold, but when I got home and closely examined, the middle of the "6" was carefully drilled out to make it appear as a "0". The oil fill hole was plugged with a freeze plug and bondo'd over, and the tapped outlets were plugged with a flat Allen screw plugs and bondo'd over.

          I suspect the 116 was either a 1970 Camero Z-28 LT-1 item or a service replacement.

I used to have a 1970 LT-1 short block that was never installed in a car. It's a CE block with a casting date of 12/29/70.
