    1968 Hood Support

91C395A6-374F-4A87-B4D6-0D037FA2BDEE.jpeghad a third bracket that mounted on the lip with a bolt and 6EDF3EC6-7F1E-4CC2-A1C7-30695B300144.jpeg rectangle shim. The build sheet shows the second support I described with the 3 attachments. Can someone clarify if there was a change during the 68 year ? Thank you in advance. Jeff

Yes Jeff there was a change during 1968. The TIM&JG says the three-bolt hood support came into use in "early to mid production."

        Re: 1968 Hood Support

When "we" were doing the updates for the 6th Edition, I came across two people that had cars built March 21st cars . Two cars, same build date. One had the old support, the other had the new support. October 21st, 1968 is a Monday. For what ever that's worth....

I had access to a March 1st car, it had the old design, but a hole in the top surround for the new design.

The above quote is from the 5th Edition of the 1968-69 TIM&JG. For the moment I am unable to locate my copy of the 6th Edition. I am sure what Gary posted is the most up to the moment information, however.

I am sorry for my out-of-date information, but at least I learned that there IS a 6th Edition. The search goes on.

              Re: 1968 Hood Support

              Sorry to hijack, same subject:
Any difference between the BB & SB hood as far as the support goes?
We have a mid April build 68 SB car. The PO installed a BB hood and a new front clip (circa 1995). It did not come with a support.

I could not get the repro support to work. The one I purchased was the only one offered then. It looks like the lower less complex support in post #1

I gave up on it as we had more important things to do to the car. That was years ago, 15ish.
I forget exactly what I did or tried to do. I remember attempting to cut and re-weld the support rail for some reason. Possibly to shorten it?

I wonder if the BB hood is off an early car?

To this day the support is not installed. I would like to attempt it again before spring.
Are both designs reproduced? If yes are they dimensionally correct? What is this third bracket mounted to the lip mentioned?

As far as I know there are no differences in the mounting of BB and SB hood during 1968 so long as both hoods came from cars built approximately the same time. There are significant differences in hoods built during 1969 (in the latches), also between 1971 and 1972 (in the hood support style and mounting location), and also service replacement hoods (more of a one size fits all). The front clip probably adds another complicating factor, but that is out of my skill range.

Just to add a note in case somebody reads this years from now.
GM change from the telescopic hood supports in 1972 to a folding hood support. The distance from the hood hinge to where the support bolts to the hood changed with the style of support. Up to 71 bolts farther away from the hood hinge than the 72 up style. Pictures below.

Thanks all, thanks for the pics Gary.
Ill have to study my problem a bit deeper with this new info.

Something definitely doesn't jive on this car. The PO, who we casually know, said he put a new front end on it because it was easier to fix, The header/rad core rivets were a mess and the bonding strips were popping etc. That's when the hood was added. It wasn't hit, no evidence of that and the guy isn't a shady character. Whom ever did the work did a decent job with exception of the hood support.

Ill follow up when I figure it out.
