'57 to '65 Fuel injection tip

This is what I have either observed or figured out thru trial and error over the years regarding various baseplate aka intake manifold studs and air meter (throttle body) studs.
    Installed height of base plate studs '57 to '62 =2-3/32. '63 to '65= 1-5/16-3/8"
Now watch this on the midyears. The top left stop holding the air meter unto the plenum needs to be shorter. RP so often had this stud sticking out the same length of the other three. I see that top left hand corner stud hitting the round boss holding the fast idle cam on. No good.
If you install them higher you will get in trouble.
Remember no washers under the 8 of 3/8-24" nuts holding the fuel injection unit to the base plate.
Rochester products used nuts that have a build in flat area. So they had no need for washers.

Anther bit of info. '57 to '65 baseplate studs (8). I have seen about 4 or 5 variations. Different companies. I know some like to see all dimpled studs but that's not correct.
But most of the '57's fuel injection's I have seen have had dimpled studs.

Air meter to plenum studs (4). About 7/8" showing -sticking out. The four 5/16" hex nuts also had a special nut that had a flat area on each side. Even though RP used a split lock washer on these studs.

I should start telling you all this kind info as you won't find it in any manual. John

          John,

Would make a great technical paper or article. Maybe even an online judging school or one at a regional or national event. I don't own any cars with FI but it's great information the should be known by the "younger" members. I've copied your post and put it in my Corvette information database.

          Thanks for sharing.

          James

Thanks all. This gives me some incentive with other tidbits. Since I spend a lot of time answering question on the phone, etc here is the most common issues with the majority of the fuel injection owners I talk to. They don't have a manual for their fuel injection. And if they do they don't read it.
When I went to the GM training center as a kid sponsored by a local Chevrolet dealer one of the courses I took
            was on fuel injection.
To make this short the final exam was on theory. Most of the class flunked the course as it was 100% on theory.
I flunked it the first time around and my instructor made an example out of me as he could not holler at the mechanics. But I was lucky enough that Paul Glagola, the instructor said I could take the course over again for free without a sponsor and then I aced the test.

Re: '57 to '65 Fuel injection tip

Leo etal, Here's exactly what the Clymer manual is referring to for those that don't know. I preach this all the time.
Do not overtighten the 1/4' nozzle retaining bolt. One should see clearance between the top of the black nozzle block and the bottom of the H-shaped steel nozzle retainer. Don't use a feeler gauge. Basically you just want to see a little clearance. I say use a business card as a feeler gauge. Or just eyeball the clearance. Why? Helps keep the nozzle blocks from cracking.
Now the H-shaped steel retainer is bowed when you take it off. When re-installing flip the retainer upside down like a piece of bowed lumber.
Then gently tighten the bolt. The brass bottoms are breaking out on the bottom of the nozzle block from brass. John

That stud on my 63 unit is 3/8" lower
