Also, here are the plastic hood blocks on a Feb '63 car. They fit against metal wedges mounted to the surround gutters.
In the above photo note the 2 holes for the metal wedges in the gutter near the tank. They were removed in that photo. Cars had 4 total in late February.
Later cars had the hood block holes filled as they did away with the blocks. They were used to keep the hood from rattling, but the engineers decided they were not necessary over time. There were several configurations of blocks iirc. None, then 2 then 4 then none..... or something like that.

Plastic blocks and metal wedges. Also note the gutters in that surround you photographed has no holes.

David, just saw your question, please see post 10. Rich circled the four blocks. These were a 63 only part. When GM decided they no longer needed them they filled the holes with bondo/putty/plugs. Some of those hoods with the holes carried into 1964.

Paul,
The 1964 inner fenders used the foam at the inner top, (front and back) the 1963 inner fenders used a bonding strip.- Top

Having nothing else to do, I went digging thru my back issues of The Restorer and found two articles by the one and only Loren Lundberg regarding these hood wedges. One in the Spring 1980 issue and a follow up in the Winter 1981 issue. As best Loren could determine in his research, they didn't start using the wedges until January 1963 and as Richard says, sometimes they used two, sometimes four.- Top

My April 63 Convertible has 4 blocks, My July 63 Coupe has no blocks, but the holes are plugged. Man it's cold in my garage.....
