1971 LT-1 - Searching for the order copy (with photos)

    Hi Folks,

I've been searching for an order copy with no success. I've not dropped the tank or otherwise tried to disassemble anything else (like the dash) yet, but from my photos... I'm not sure it's there either way.

In this photo album linked - you will see everywhere that I have looked (without diassembling)

    • Took photos of inside windows
    • Took photos of around tank with spill shield rubber removed
    • Took photos around the tach and speedometer and radio
    • Took photos under the seats

Anyone see anything I don't? It's a low mileage car with mostly original parts, so I'd hope there is one somewhere. I know some of the options (or lack of) from speaking with the original owner (obviously LT-1 being the major one!), but it would be nice to have it.

    Mick

Michael the only thing I noticed, in photos 11 and 12 of the tank it looks like that could be remnants of the original GM P/N sticker for the gas tank. Looks very similar to the one I found on my original tank. Could be a good sign that you have the original.

One small additional item, the screw clamp shown at the sending unit in photos 13 and 14 is a generic replacement.

Mike, I have found tank sticker paper rolled up and installed in the strut bracket bolted to the rear. Diff. And also in the trailing arm, both areas were later years, worth a look.

Well spotted John! Thanks for looking in such detail. I figured that the square imprint may be from the sticker you mention. I will also look for a proper clamp.

In reviewing the photos, it also looks like I may have disconnected the spill hose, I didn’t reconnect it before I closed it up! The nipple looks damaged but I am not sure.

One follow up John - should the clamp be more like the one in Photo 11? I can also check AIM.

hey Patrick, yes I pulled it back but no luck . You can see the photos in the link in the first post. As for the sticker, per one of the earlier posts, I believe some of them left the factory with that sticker on.

I don’t know if the part number sticker on the tank is a good sign. I don’t remember seeing them on original tanks. Does anyone know if the part number stickers were only on replacement tanks or were on original tanks too?

For someone in future years reading this post; as Patrick indicates, it is very uncommon for GM parts stickers to be placed on assembly-line parts. The fact you found no tank sticker on the top could very well point to your having a replacement tank. Was there any indication of a glob of glue?
In conversation with the original owner of my 71 LS6, (the only previous owner to have driven the car) he has no recollection of the tank having been replaced. But it was. No glue, no nothing on the top of the present tank. FWIW
BTW, Mick, on the lower hose, the one clamp looks to be correct. The side screw hose is not. AIM isn’t nearly as accurate as the TIMJG.

Thanks for weighing in Mike - very possible then that it may be a replacement tank - it looks quite old and crusty though so must have been replaced in the 80s or 90s if that is the case. There’s a lot of dust on the tank, so it’s hard to tell about the glue. I have the TIMJG, I should have looked at that.

                      Mick,

Help me understand what it is that you are looking to get a photo of. Is it the tank sticker or the actual dealer order form itself. I have pics of both and would be happy to send to you. - Ron

                          Hey Ron,

Thank you for responding, I'm not looking for any photos actually, sorry for the confusion. The reference to the photos in my post is to the link below, which is my own photos of where I have searched for build sheets. So far I have been unsuccessful in detecting one on the car and thought maybe folks could determine if I am looking in the wrong places. The car is a 51,000 mile LT-1, and so the tank may have been replaced but I can't confirm.

My tank sheet was not visible pulling back the boot... it was much closer to the passenger side on top of the tank.
