    Spin on Oil filter

I bought a Mr. Gasket #1270 spin-on filter kit for my 57 (1963 870 block engine). Filter is Delco PF1218. The original canister is in bad shape.

The kit comes with a 13/16 id thick rubber washer. The diagram shows this washer installed on the nipple between the Mr. Gasket adapter plate and the filter. This does not seem right to me - I would think it should be between the bypass plate and the adapter plate.
Can anyone provide guidance for me on this? I searched and looked through the archives but did not see anything on this. I don't want to get this wrong.

You may want to research that kit on line. Seems to have a reputation for leaks. One suggested alternative is a Trans Dapt 1024. I checked, and it's available at Summit, Amazon, etc. for about $35. I have not used this particular item, but other Trans Dapt items have proven to be Quality pieces.

      Thanks Paul,

I researched both suppliers before I bought the Mr. Gasket. Reading all the data on both kits, I determined that both were different, but both would work. Reviews were mixed for both suppliers, so I don't know if one is better than the other, or not.

Anyhow, I was looking for more detailed installation data. Have not heard back from anyone else yet.

      Thanks for responding.

Dan, I just googled your kit and got a look at the installation instructions. They show the rubber washer between the bypass plate and the adapter, not between the adapter and filter. Also, of course you have the seal between the adapter and the block that functions much like your original cannister seal does.

          Thanks Paul,

Yes, I took a closer look at the instructions, and yes, the washer goes just where I thought it should. Just my old eyes cannot see that well anymore; the instructions and diagram could be better. I cut the end off of the little tube of locking compound supplied with the kit. Could not get the fluid to flow out of the tube. Barley enough to do both the nipple and the mounting bolts anyhow, so I used Loctite 262 threadlocker.

Next to impossible to install this assembly while laying on your back under the car, so I glued the washer in place with weather strip adhesive. Then it went in very easily and I am assured that the washer stayed in place in the grove of the adapter.

Neither supplier gives a torque spec for the mounting bolts, and you have to be very careful with small 1/4-20 hardware. Easy to over-torque. No markings on the supplied bolts, so I have to assume they are grade 2. I read someplace that torque is 8 ft. lbs., so I will do that.

If I don't get any leaks, then this thread is over. If it does leak, then I will respond back.
