I've a 427; for the most part I didn't need to remove anything that wasn't directly connected to the block. I did disconnect the steering idler arm from the frame to swing it down and away to remove the oil pan. It was much easier to remove the two frame bolts than release any of the cotter pins, nuts and joints.

I also just have a jack and jack stands. A couple times the car needed to be raised and lowered to access under and above at different stages during the process.

So, even if an intake or exhaust valve is all the way open and piston is at TDC, there will be no contact in a Chevy engine? Educate me.
      Thanks

Valve lift would not be high enough on a factory cam to contact the piston if a valve is in open position. a lot of the Japanese engine are called interference engines in which the valve can contact the piston. If a small or big block engine has been modified in camshaft lift and pistons are domed there could be contact.

Perhaps I am mistaken or maybe was told a story when I bought a non running 71 Camaro when I was in high school with a bone stock 307 - it was claimed to have had problems (stripped the timing gear) made noises and lost power while the owner was accelerating on the interstate- I found nearly every push rod was bent - upon replacement there was no compression on 3 cylinders, turns out there were assorted bent valve stems.
It was not a modified engine what so ever... with out interference between the pistons and valves I cannot explain the bent push rods and valve stems.

Here is a photo of a sb intake valve, it's location nearly on the deck, I believe if it opens more than .050 it would be out of the head chamber and into the cylinder.
