Re: Help Q jet leaking gas

I suppose you could compare the buoyancy of the original float to a new one. Since that requires disassembly and buying a new float, you might as well just replace it.

Rebuilding a Q-Jet is a great DIY project but if you haven't done it before, I suggest doing some homework. There are some common mistakes to avoid that cause damage and problems. The book Rochester Quadrajet Carburetors by Cliff Ruggles is a good resource. His company is also a good source for quality kits and parts; see https://cliffshighperformance.com

If you haven't rebuilt your carb I would suggest that while it's fun you have someone experienced with Quadrajets do it.

Some of the rebuild kits have extra parts and incorrect parts, and if you don't know what parts you need it is confusing.
Given the low mileage on the car I would not restore it.
Also, if you have the original brown-ish gasket between the carb and the air cleaner don't throw it away.

An additional resource for tuning and troubleshooting the Quadrajet are articles by Lars Grimsrud:

I have found his carburetor articles to be very helpful.

I would also recommend sending the carb to the author of these article, Lars Grimsrud, for rebuilding. I have sent a couple to hime and on return, I simply bolted them on and they ran perfectly.

                  Here's another reference for a '75 Q-Jet rebuild.

Check the air horn, float bowl and throttle plate for warp before you order parts or do anything. A small amount of warp can be corrected.

Call Cliff before you order the kit. Have your carb float bowl and throttle plate numbers available.
He prefers to talk vs text & email. Very interesting character, in a good way.

If you live close enough to him he prefers to have the cars attached to the carbs. But he will flow test yours if you choose to have him rebuild. Keep in mind he will not do replating. He may be able to assist in contracting that out. Other rebuilders will do both.

Cliff has the highest quality kits on the market. It will be specific to a range of carbs. You will have left over parts.

There are some subtle QJ tricks that the beginner might miss so read the books and watch some videos for the visuals.

Don't over tighten the fuel filter housing or air cleaner wing nut. The threaded rod for the air cleaner will pull up on the center of the throttle body and will warp it.
Re check ALL screws holding this carb together at 2-500 miles. Yes pull it off the intake and check throttle plate to bowl screws.

Strongly consider blocking off the heat crossover and disabling the thermo flap in the drivers side exhaust...unless you are getting it judged.

Run ethanol free gas if possible.

Cliff will rebuild and re-time the throttle plate if its loose and out of time. $60 was the last quote I got for that service in 2021. Well worth that.
