Re: 69 L71 rear leaf springs
Joseph,
Did you torque the four spring retaining bolts at the differential before or after the full weight of the car was on the ground?Leif

Re: 69 L71 rear leaf springs
Joseph , the factory rear F41 lower shock mounts have 9 numbers are point on the outside and if you don't have a part number there not Original , for the F41 leaf spring there's 7 leafs no spacer, before lowering the car to ground with wheels on lightly hand tighten the four spring bolts when fully on the ground torque the 4 bolts on the ground at 50 lb. then 65 lb. if you torque the bolts before lower to ground you have a chance to break off the two tabs.47 (2).jpg- Top

Re: 69 L71 rear leaf springs
Joseph,
Danny in post #50 has given you great advice. My concern was that if you had torqued the bolts before the full weight of the car was on them, that will most times not allow the spring to settle correctly and can result in a high ride height. Doesn't appear that that's your issue. Keep us posted as you figure this one out.Leif

Re: 69 L71 rear leaf springs
Joseph, You said you discovered F41 shock mounts on the car, but your photos show a shiny one and a old one. Did you get new? Why couldn't you use the originals.
As Danny showed, left and right originals have the cast number "382926566". Same casting was used for either side. 3829265 is the left, 3829266 is the right. The only difference between them is the machining for the flat for proper orientation in the spindle support strut.
Service replacements used a ink stamp, repros laser etched the numbers, or vice versa, I forget.
Your question about the cast "1" on yours..... Might be just a mold number when they were cast(or forged).
Photos of both sides of originals HERE.

Re: 69 L71 rear leaf springs
Nice.
I've seen some like yours with a "-" and others like the ones I showed.
3829265-6 or 382926566
Likely cast/forged at different suppliers.

Re: 69 L71 rear leaf springs
Joseph, Autorotate should be off.
See this thread for how I fix them, even if autorotate is off on Android.. Here
See this post ,
For some photos of the Eaton 9 leaf I used. It was high. I used longer bolts to correct it. It took a few years but it settled and the bolts needed adjusting.

Re: 69 L71 rear leaf springs
Joseph-----Yesterday I removed the 7 leaf spring (EBay purchase with GLS embossing) I put on last week where the car sat too high and replaced it with the initial 7+1 (spacer) spring I bought from the warehouse in LA. The 7+1 is definitely not a 63-74 year model.
I installed the spring, left the bolts loose, and then lowered the car, bounced the car around, rolled it forward and backwards, then tightened the bolts.
I took some measurements, and will now put back on the EBay spring and do it all over again to see where the car sits.
Still can’t figure out why the rear shock rod is so exposed and why the car still sits so high. I can’t imagine a tank of gas at around 120 pounds is going to put the car where it needs to be.
I know this has been a problem with some of the Eaton 9 leaf springs but What about for the used, original springs?
Anyone encounter this problem and how did you correct it?
EBay spring installed.

This still looks to me like there is way too much camber on the rear wheels. As I mentioned previously, the spring should be virtually flat with the weight of the car on the suspension and the suspension normalized. The half shafts should be nearly parallel to the ground, too. In order to normalize the suspension you have to move the car forward or reverse for a significant distance. You can't just try to "bounce" it or "rock" it.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
