    66 headlight motors

    Hello All,
    I pulled my headlight motors to rebuild. I printed the many restoration documents from this site for reference. What my question is, how did everyone clean the outside?. I see where one document says to bead blast. What kind of media should i use and pressure? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

    This is my first time restoring the motors.

    Thanks.

    Mike

    Brake cleaner and be done with it. Nobody will see it once installed.

      I used a medium grit in my sand blaster when they were assembled after I did the rebuild. Big mistake because I had to take apart to check something and noticed that some of the "grit" got inside the motor. Make sure to sand blast BEFORE doing the rebuild.

        Last spring I did the two motors for my friends 67 and all I did was strip the motors electrical components out and then I used the wire wheel to clean up the corrosion and then sprayed them with semi-gloss clear. I could have left them alone, as John said, but I wanted them to look good so my friend was happy. It didn't take long to clean them up.

            John,

            I know I'm a little late to the discussion, but here are some pictures of a C2 headlight motor cleaning, before during and after. I use either the Safetst Rust Remover or EvapoRust as a cleaner to remove the rust along with a brass or stainless steel brush.

            I use either a matte clear finish to keep them lookin original or you can shoot them with your favorite gray colored paint. Cast blast doesn't look bad.

                John,

                If you decide to go with the cleaners I mentioned, let me know, there is some things you will need to suspend the the motors in the cleaning solution so that it doesn't get inside of it. I've done this on several pairs of headlight motors and have never had a problem. Send me a personal message or email address and I will send you some addition pictures and descriptions on how I do it.

                Regards,

                James West

                    John,
                    I have a list (3 pages) of rust removal products used by various members. If you desire a copy send me an email.

                    I too use the Safest Rust, great stuff.

                      Alan,

                      Do you think Safest Rust Remover is better than EvapoRust? If so, in what way(s)? Is it cheaper? As skin friendly?

                        So here is the data I have:

                        Rid Rust now Safest Rust ultraoneusa.com

                        Edgewater Industrial Park
                        112 East Avenue,Unit 8
                        Hackettstown, NJ 07840

                        ph=5.25 $25/Gal

                        Evapo-Rust (com), also see orisonllc.com or orisonmarketing.com ph=6.1 done working at 7.0
                        ph=6.1 $21/gal $18/gal @Harbor Freight + shipping

                        I found the Rid Rust in early 2000's, liked it so much just stuck with it. The ph is a little lower (no big deal I suspect) If you leave small parts in solution tooo long they will turn black which can be buffed off, however makes a nice Black Phos for a part. Just handle with gloves since black into skin for a few days. Not sure of latest prices or availability, so would also consider the Evpo-Rust based upon current conditions.

                          I am using EvapoRust also. When I took those pictures it was probably 2010 or 2011. I bought a 5 gallon bucket through Home Depot which had the best price at the time. For gallon jugs I have found that Tractor Supply has/had the best price.
