Pull out the dipstick. If the level is high and the stick smells like gas, you probably had hydro lock. Otherwise, the starter and flywheel are the suspects.- Top

Yes, that could very well be the problem. All 1965 Corvettes were equipped with starters with an aluminum nose and this nose is very subject to breakage. If so, the original starter nose was GM #1968122. It's long-since GM discontinued. However, there are available aftermarket replacements which are virtually identical to the originals. Of course, there are also used originals but beware of cracks.
Something that can induce a starter nose breakage: the use of standard bolts for starter attachment rather than the special "knurled shank" starter bolts. ALWAYS use the special bolts.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
