64 rear differential tag - open - not limited slip

I'm finally starting to clean up some of the findings from having my car judged earlier this year. I have a question regarding the differential tag. I was given a deduction because my rear differential is missing the "main" tag.

My differential is not limited slip, it's an open 3:36 rear end. I've searched online and find tags saying limited slip lube required but nothing else really. Would my car have had that tag on it even though it isn't limited slip or something else? If so, what tag am I searching for? I guess I could put a limited slip tag on it but that doesn't seem correct. Did open differentials have a tag on the plug?

    Thanks,

    Steve

No, they didn't. Should have brought that to the attention of the judges at the time of judging.

      Thanks Leif,

I thought maybe that was the case. It was only one point but that's an easy pick-up next time now that I know.

Steve, In my opinion there should have been no deduction, just a note. The differential and yoke are worth 5 originality points. That being said the judges assigned 4 points to the differential and yoke and 1 point to the two tags (one the differential fluid tag and the other the differential ratio tag). So 1/2 point per tag. That's a 1/2 point deduction according to CDCIF math. Amazing!

And in your case, a judging error. Just to be safe, what is the code on the underside of the differential?

How far away from top-Flight were you?

Hi Harry, the code on my differential is CA 4 6 64. My car was built in April of 64 so I'm fairly certain this is the original differential. I know for sure it's not limited slip so everything seems correct. I lost two points for this. One for originality and one for condition. The exact judges note reads "Diff Tag Missing - Main One." There is nothing else noted.

I missed top flight by about 75 points. My final % was 92.6. I've owned the car two years and this was my first time having the car judged so I have plenty of items to work through. Most of them are only a few points each so it will take me awhile to get it ready for another meet.

            Steve,

How many points did you lose in OPS?

3 OPS items that don't work properly gets you to 75 pts. deduct.
Depending on what they are, you can get a pretty good $/pt. return fixing OPS things that don't function as intended.
            thx,
            Mark

Hi Mark, The good news is my car functioned very well that day. I lost zero points in OPS. The bad news is I may not get as lucky next time so I need to have a point cushion in case something doesn't work. I did have a couple big hits for things I'm not going to undo like over restored paint. My car is a weekend driver so there's always some sort of cleaning and maintenance required.

                Good deal, Steve!

When I took my car thru 2 Regionals and 1 National, I developed a spreadsheet of what all of my deductions were and then sorted it highest deduct to lowest.

I also had a column for my estimated price to gain those points back. That was pretty enlightening!

So, I always went for the max points gained with the fewest bucks spent

PS - I was always happy (but really had to work at a few things to keep them going) that I (like you) never lost any OPS points at any of those 3 events.

                Good luck!
                thx,
                Mark
