Re: 66 Base Engine W/Side Pipes and Steering Damper Shock (Close Fit) Question

Regarding your comment above i.e., which part would have more issue with heat. I think clearly the end of the shock that hooks to the frame. In looking at my 67, for the end of the damper cylinder to get close to the side pipe and get hot enough to cause a problem, you would need to be turning in a tight right turn for quite a while to get much heat onto the damper cylinder. Of course, it could be different with a power steering ram.

Regarding the date on the damper. If you look at the Chassis judging sheets for the Front Suspension (where the steering stabilizer is discussed in the TIM/JG), there is no line item for it, nor is it mentioned in any of the other line items. I also checked the judging sheets for my (previous car) 66 coupe at the Altoona Regional and there is no mention on the judging sheets of the damper.

Here's a picture of the 66 coupe shortly after I finished the restoration. My steering damper was shot and had the wrong date. I sent it to Dan Patch and he restored and re-dated it.

Some dedicated (and sufficiently skinny) judges can and do look for the date on the damper with a light and mirror, and judge it.

Final Outcome For The Above. Installation went well but as you can see it shows a little too close for comfort for
me. Since my car is a trailer queen I suspect there will be no problem If I used it on a regular bases I would take
Edward Johnson's and David Moreland's advise above. I guess every car is built a little different as far as being close. Pictures Below>
Thanks for all the responses. Larry
