I hate to ask a question like this but i am having a hard time with a rebuilder,. I took the rear end out of my car to have it rebuilt , my main objective was to make it look good, was functioning good. He rebuilt it and i put back in only to find out it was not right. I took it back out and gave it back , he said he was given wrong parts. I again reinstalled it and i am now getting a clunking noise.I was looking things over yesterday and found that with car in neutral one wheel on ground other wheel up i could spin the one wheel freely. I have worked on a lot of corvettes but do not remember if this was normal , i always thought i had to have both wheels up to spin a tire. These do not come out easily , is this a sign that it is coming back out. Maybe i should have listened to Bubba ' if it aint broke do not fix it

Re: 1969 rear end
Do you know if the rear end has posi? It originally would have the red tag on the fill plug if posi. Could you read the stamp on the bottom of the housing flange next to cover flange? Open ( non posi ) rear ends did come in some 69s. The other possibility is the posi spring plates and 4 springs have been removed. If so an eaton clutch pack posi carrier will still work as a posi under power but have different characteristics including feeling like a non posi when jacked up and spinning one wheel and the other doesn't spin with it. The clunk sound may be serious.- Top

Re: 1969 rear end
Before you take to someone else, I would mount it on an engine stand if you have one, pull the cover, drain the oil and send me pictures. I build these every day, well today I am doing a box and TA's, but I would be happy to look it over for you. Finding a good local rebuilder is not easy, many will say they can do it and at best, you get what I call a vendor level build. If that's what you want ok but I would never use one.
Given wrong parts is a huge red flag. The bearings are the same as used in 12 bolt cars. The posi and gears are specific so yes could be wrong parts but that story sound fishy to me.
Is the snubber bushing good, no cracks in the frame mount?
As for the posi action. Yes if both rear wheels are off the ground, turning one will usually turn the other unless as Mark said the posi springs are weak or they're missing. I have seen plenty of weak springs, mostly in C3 diffs from the mid 70's. One I recall I was able to remove them by pinching with my fingers, and I don't have bionic fingers.
Now if the posi was attempted to be tuned, meaning no spring pack used, that could be an issue. That is not to say it won't work, every posi I built for the past 20+ years does not have a spring pack in it. I never use them, and they are out there with over 100k miles still working both wheels BUT you have to know how to do the work and have access to a surface grinder- both of which I have. If not, it will be an open diff for the most part but the clunking noise won't usually come from that.
Sounds like this guy really didn't know much, I wonder what the lash is set to?
Lastly, some of the parts today are for a lack of a better word- junk. New or rebuilt axles fall into that catagory. Some posi clutches and axle bearings too. Do you have a list of parts that was replaced and how they were dialed in? One thing I do is always send pictures and a report so if there is any question you know what was done.
If you have more questions just contact me and I will be happy to go over them.- Top
