    What Kind Of Point Deduction Can We Expect From A "Dealer Prep" Undercoating Job?

    AFAIK the NCRS judging is based on the car after "Dealer" Prep. eg>Hub caps put on;keys put in glove box;
    license frames with plates put on and etc. Question: What if the dealer offered a free undercoating job for all
    new car buyers as some did? My 66 Coupe had this done at "Z" Frank Chevrolet on Western Ave. in Chicago.
    My protecto plate shows the original buyer and dealer. I also have a paperwork on that undercoating that was
    done to the car at the dealership. YES I KNOW THIS IS WHAT NOT TYPICAL OF NEW CORVETTES AT THAT
    TIME. SO>What points would be deducted? Condition perhaps? Or?. I will not attempt to take this undercoating
    off as this is how the car was delivered to the customer. Comments Please and Thanks>Larry

    My first thought is... it depends. It depends on which components are affected. Undercoating would be a Finish deduction for each component listed on the judging sheet. The amount of each deduction would depend on how much of that component's finish is affected by the undercoating. So with the judging sheet in hand, evaluate each line item affected.

      Mark has it right. Use CDCIF.. 20% deduct for Finish, on the Underbody, and the Frame, which includes the numbers and shim marks covered over, and the suspension. The terminology is "typical" dealer prep. Applying undercoating was not typical dealer prep.. Get the scoring sheets for Chassis, and look at all areas coated in that stuff. Take off 20% at least..

        If the one doing the undercoating was more thorough, you lose more. There are times it then affects configuration (can't see something) as well as other areas of CDCIF.
        Of course, you then can't see the condition of the item, so...

          Undercoating has a preservative effect and so on natural finish items, its protective. In its removal, remnants remain. Take for example strut rods, great efforts to remove undercoating reveal the original finish, yet one can detect undercoating at the joints. Its a finish where there shouldn't be a finish.

          In contrast, while it preserves, say the finish of the frame, in the process of removal, it removes the finish and, as others have described above, can affect originality and how its judged. Where there should be finish, with the removal of undercoating, rust develops which is a condition issue. So the presence of undercoating and its subsequent removal affects both originality and condition in the judging process!

              I've addressed the undercoating issue on a few Corvettes and I have to deal with it on a 1970 I recently purchased. If you can get it off the chassis components and bottom of the car, that should prevent loss of points. I'd leave the inner fenders alone since the amount of undercoat varied in that area. You may expect to lose 10 to 15 points depending on the application of undercoat. I'm just shooting from the hip here.

                Don't mean to hijack this thread but I have a similar question about muffler blackout. During the resto of my 69 I did the blackout as indicated under the hood and on the wheel wells, but I haven't been able to bring myself to do it on the nice, brand new mufflers. What kind of points deduction would that bring, to not have it on just the mufflers?

                    OK Gary I'll start a new thread for that.
