Re: Hayden 2711 fan clutch
Jack,
K&B makes a very nice reproduction fan clutch (sold through Zip Products). I can tell you from personal experience that they function every bit as well as they look.

Re: Hayden 2711 fan clutch
Zero point deductions in 2017 & 2018 at the Lone Star Regionals. Notation that the thermostatic strip appears narrow. More importantly to me is that unit is totally locked up at 165* and it solved an idling overheating problem I had been having. I've had mine for better than five years and 25000 trouble free miles.Leif

Re: Hayden 2711 fan clutch
Leif,
Goog to hear. I was going to get an original fan clutch rebuilt for for my '65 L79 with a/c, but if the point deduction is zero or a point or two I'll go with the reproduction from ZIP. I plan to have this car judged in the near future and it will be driven to the meets. At this time it has a GM service replacement that works excellent, but it is a big block fan clutch.
Thanks,
James

Re: Hayden 2711 fan clutch
The 1965 and 1966 National Chassis Team will give a 2 point deduct for the reproduction Switzer fan clutch from ZIP. Config and finish if you install it as delivered from the vendor. The front face lacks the factory word stamping (config). The lower stepped base that attaches to the water pump should be painted flat silver. Out of the box, the shaft and mounting plate is unpainted. You can get one of the two points back by painting the lower base. See the 1965 TIM JG for a fuller description.

Re: Hayden 2711 fan clutch
Gary, the Switzer is dated differently than the Eaton. The Eaton will have an ink date stamp on the face. The Switzer has a date roll stamped on the mounting baseplate. Switzer fan clutches were not necessarily dated from 1963 through 1965. We regularly see dates on 1966 and later Switzer fan clutches. Easton fan clutches were generally dated.
The question we are still researching is whether the CJ stamp existed before the introduction of the 396 engine in 1965 when the CK (BB) fan clutch was introduced. The SB and BB fan clutches are configured differently (shaft length is different).
Hope this helps!

Re: Hayden 2711 fan clutch
Gary....yes. Here the passage directly out of the 1965 TIM JG:
The formed aluminum face of the clutch has a bright finish and is stamped:
Patented in US
Patented in Canada in 1961
Other Patents Pending
The reproductions do not have this stamping on the front face. Therefore, the config deduct. That's 1 point.
A common finish deduction is based on the reproductions not having a painted base. Some owners just install these Switzer reproductions as-is right out of the box. Here's the text from the 1965 TIM JG:
The shaft of this clutch design has a distinct step between the flange and the clutch body. The thicker part of the shaft, including the flange, is painted silver up to where the step begins. The thinner part of the shaft, which enters the clutch body, retains the natural steel finish.
When the thicker portion of the shaft is left natural and unpainted, then that gets a 1 point finish deduct. This one is easy to fix. Just paint it as described in the manual.
Thanks for your input!

Re: Hayden 2711 fan clutch
FYI, the fan clutch shown on the left would likely get a 100% deduct for 1965 and 1966 National judging as being significantly dissimilar. TonyRegion VII Director (serving members in Arkansas, Kansas, Louisiana, Missouri, Oklahoma and Texas).

Yes, Gary. The National Team is the one that actually writes the manuals. TonyRegion VII Director (serving members in Arkansas, Kansas, Louisiana, Missouri, Oklahoma and Texas).
