    Re: Car Breakdown: Lessons Learned

I hope you have called Hagerty and expressed your frustration of this experience. I used to used Hagerty but switched to NCM many years ago. I have not had to use their road side assistance but a few people I talked to have and they had no issues. Plus premiums in my case were less

I have been driving my Corvettes for 55 years, daily driver, vacations and recently, to Mobile on the Road Tour from NJ. I have never had a break down with a Corvette. However I use AAA and never use the insurance company towing for my regular cars. AAA is wonderful.

I'm a long time AAA member too. But as mentioned above, they don't tow the car- they subcontract that service. So the care and skill of the driver and condition of their equipment is a crap shoot... dependant on who AAA dispatches.

My preference is to screen and select the service myself, then be reimbursed (in my case by NCM Insurance).

Thanks Chris. All good info. I just upgraded my AAA membership as I wanted the extra range on the tow distance. Sorry you had such poor service from Hagerty. Mark

That's really good to know about the towing, I know they are first rate with claims as others have said. I've never needed a tow, but have wondered about the Corvette Museum Ins roadside service. Hopefully others with NCM have had similar good experiences after a breakdown.

Mike, The AAA RV tow plan covers, cars, motor cycles, trailers being towed and of course RVs. A little more, but four tows up to 200 miles per year. Had to use it a few years back coming from Hot August Nights. Hauled it 180 miles with just a tip and thanks to the driver.

Just a question about getting towed.

When the car is towed do you ride back with the driver?

It used to be this was virtually automatic. However, about 2 years ago I needed a tow for my driver car due to a failed starter motor.

I'm a Premier AAA member and the service truck responded fairly quickly but was unable to be of any help, so a tow truck was summoned. It also responded fairly quickly. However, I had been told on the phone by the AAA agent that whether I could ride back to my house (which is where I was having the car towed) with the tow truck was "at the option of the driver". Well, my driver wouldn't allow it so I had to make other arrangements.

I don't know if this is still allowable by AAA drivers but if it is it's a real great reason for me to cancel my membership (after being a member for 54 years).

Right John, yes, that is the version I have, and I did get it upgraded after I started towing my trailer. Luckily, I have not had to use it for my tow truck or trailer setup. But it would be a lifesaver if you needed that.

                        Re: Car Breakdown: Lessons Learned

It used to be standard practice that you could ride with the tow truck driver to where they took your car. That's changed. I was told that it was up to the driver. My driver was a good guy and said I could go with him in his truck. But the AAA telephone person told me that not all drivers allow that. I'm sure that if you put on a mask and tipped him that he'd allow you to go with him.

BTW, it was the coil that caused my problem.

                          Joe,
I had the same experience a couple years ago during the throes of covid. I think some companies are clutching onto that convenient excuse.

So, your car gets rescued and you are stranded. That is ridiculous.
