Symptoms of having a bad CSV

Other than running rich, how would a bad CSV affect drivability?

Is there an easy way to test a CSV?

    Regards,
    Jerry

Jerry, how about what year, model and engine. Then someone might have a chance to answer your question.

Not familiar with 63 unit, but if the Csv has a hose connection, install a longer hose, start the car then crimp the longer hose so that it isolates the Csv from the system. If the engine smooths out its the csv for certain. Hope this helps.

              Leo,
When the cranking signal valve is bad on a '58 to early '64 fuel injection you will know it for sure.
Black smoke out the exhaust. Fouling of spark plugs.
              Hard to start. Running rich.
The CSV controls the manifold vacuum to the main diaphragm. When its bad you get a lot of vacuum on this diaphram which in theory controls the accelerate pump aka spill valve.
I have a complicated set up that my friend Jerry Bramlett made me years ago.
Forget what the manuals says as incorrect info.
Step 1. I put the threaded end in my mouth. Then I start in haling and immediately put a finger on the round tube. Then I should not be able to inhale any air. If it leaks big time then the valve is history. But I still do Step 2.
Step2. I have a Mity Vacuum pump just for testing these critters. This pump has fittings on the rubber hose so I can screw in the CSV. I also put an o'ring in the fitting to insure it's sealing. Or just force the rubber hose from pump onto the threaded end of CSV.
Then I pump up to about 15" or so on the gauge while holding my finger on the round tube.
Then I remove my finger from the tube and watch the gauge. I am looking for a nice even sweep leaking down to zero in 7 seconds or more.
Yes this is crude but it works.
In my trailer for Corvette Carlisle i have this pump with me. It's my life saver.

Plan B: Forget all of the above and do this. Take the CSV out of the system by putting about a 4' piece of 1/4" hose between the CSV and the vacuum line it's attached to. Swing this line up in the air to get the required length. Clamp the hose shut.

Try and start the car by taking a clean oil can with gas in it. Not starting fluid. Squirt some gas in the air meter. In the midyears there is hex fitting in back on the plenum. Remove it. Squirt gas in the plenum. Install fitting finger tight. Start engine. If your issues disappear you are having with the CSV installed then you know it's bad.
All FI owners that have a CSV need to carry a piece of hose and baby vise grips in glove box. You could drive across the country with the tip above
