Another case of government making laws that only screw things up an make it harder for honest people while doing nothing to stop what they made the laws for.

It's interesting how state laws vary. In Texas, you own the plates. When the car is sold, the seller removes and keeps the plates. I have a collection of plates from cars I owned hanging on the garage wall.

Used be that way in NY but 10-15 years ago they started a process where every week the insurance companies update DMV on any insurance cancellations due to non payment or anything else. Then you get a registered letter demanding the plates back and after that the sheriff comes to your house.

My son lived in Pittsburgh for five years he moved and never got a car insurance bill and never thought about it (kids). He drove for six months without insurance until our agent asked if he had moved back home. I don’t know if it’s still like that in PA but I see a lot of PA plates around here on cars that look like they are worth $1000 on a good day. I suspect they registered the car in PA at a friend’s address, get insurance and pay one month and disappear. There are many more drivers on the road here with no insurance and no assets than you’d like to think.
