Re: Vent Window Regulator Removal
Paul - Once you get the wing window regulator out, you might find that the back plate has loosened or even dropped off. That back plate is only held on by a pair of peened over aluminum/potmetal bosses. With a lot of use, the gear pushes back against the plate and it sometimes comes off.
IMG_2324.jpgIMG_5965.jpgIMG_5967.jpg Usually, after the peened over bosses have 'given up' there isn't enough material left to re-peen them to secure the plate so drilling those bosses and tapping them for a small retention screw like an 8-32 or so would do the trick.Mike T. - Prescott AZ.- Top

Re: Vent Window Regulator Removal
Paul,
Once you remove the vent regulator, and if you open it up, you might find that the main helical gear is damaged. Teeth might be bent or worn, causing excessive slop when changing cranking direction. More than about a 1/4 turn of slop when changing direction is considered excessive. That excessive slop is a well-known bane to those trying for a PV.
If your gear is bad, and you need a new one, be forewarned that the easily available reproduction helical gears are not configured like the original gears. The original gear had a section around the periphery that had no teeth. Here are a couple of photos of original gears that I found on the web. (Sorry about the low resolution.) The non-tooth section is at the bottom in phone #1, and at the top in photo #2.

Re: Vent Window Regulator Removal
Just last week I partly rebuilt my driver side wing window regulator. My issue was more "wobble" back and forth of the vent window and not so much the cranking. Once I got the door panel off I found that the bolt that holds the regulator to the window "leg" had stripped and became very loose causing the wing window to have way too much wobble back and forth. I also discovered that the worm gear/shaft in my regulator was incorrect for my '67 because it was too long and didn't allow for my window crank to seat up next to the door panel. A fellow NCRS member had one of the shorter ones so I replaced it and came out perfect. In my research I found that Zip carries a drivers side only gear with the correct stops. The unit is made by Paragon with the Zip label on it. It is the correct pot metal cast versus the now current aluminum gear where the teeth run all of the way around. As it turned out I didn't need the gear, so it goes into the parts bin unless someone is interested in it.Garry Barnes #18531

Re: Vent Window Regulator Removal
Gary,
The Zip/Paragon gear looks exactly like what I saw on eBay last year. It’s interesting that Paragon only has the left side. Maybe that’s why the person who rebuilt my two regulators two years ago sent me the drivers side with the end stops, but the passenger’s side without. Maybe the company that makes the gear thinks that only the driver’s side will wear out.

Re: Vent Window Regulator Removal
Gary, I am not sure that Paragon is making this gear anymore. I looked at their catalog and did not see this item that clearly has their label on it. It might be one that Zip acquired through the LIC acquisition. I had the phone sales person at Zip go pull one of these and he confirmed for me that there was a space (stop) on these and that they only have two left. I bought the third one they had. Kind of looks like the vendors may be headed towards the "all teeth" version. Not knowing whether I needed one or not, I went ahead and ordered one just to have one if needed.Garry Barnes #18531

Re: Vent Window Regulator Removal
The gear is the same for all of the C2 years. The difference is the worm gear/shaft. There is a full discussion on these recently on this board that you can read about the 1, 2 and 3 ring shafts and the various lengths of each and their application. Once you have removed the rivet heads and tapped the new holes, the kit came with two screws and two washers to put in place to keep the face place from coming off. I had to use the two screws and washers, but the are of standard size and easily available. I will try to post a set of the instructions which also shows the various parts and pieces involved.Attached FilesGarry Barnes #18531

Re: Vent Window Regulator Removal
Paul, welcome and congrats on fixing this problem with your regulator. The more small problems you fix the more confidence you will have in fixing the bigger problems. It part of the hobby and part of the fun in owning a C2.
Cheers!

Re: Vent Window Regulator Removal
Garry,
Are you saying there is no left-right difference in the large gear? So the LH gear that Paragon sells will work on the RH side?
