    Bringing back a Canadian purchase

For those of you who may have purchased a classic car and brought it across the border from the great white north, what do I need to know to minimize costs? Are there any taxes, etc that have to be paid before entering the US? Documentation?

    Thanks,
    Bill

Bill, I'm unfamiliar with importation from Canada, but,

Firstly, make sure you have a NICB database check done on the car vin before any purchase monies go out..

Depending on your state DMV policies, you may be able to request that they do the National vin check for you as a prep.

Here in FL, at my local DMV, I've given them the vin of a potential car purchase from outside the US, and ask them to verify it before I buy it. Once clear, I can proceed.

Reason I'm suggesting this is because I know of a 1967 Corvette that resides in Canada that is a counterfeited copy of a car here in the US. The real car has been authenticated. The fake car has a repro vin tag.

If the fake car should ever attempt to cross the border, I suspect it would be confiscated and the new owner would have to seek legal counsel for recovery.

Have race shop in Detroit and bring unlimited hydroplanes across border often (partial Canadian crew). Call Canada Border Services Agency to get necessary documents, info etc.. The number we use is 519-337-7875 / Fax# 519 336-8579 They may direct you somewhere else but at least they are a good start.

You should check with your state's DMV, as most all Canadian cars seem to be sold only on a registration and have no title. This can create additional paperwork, costs, and delays in registering and titling in your state depending on their rules about such cars.

Dont think you pay anything if the car was made in the USA.

Bill , get a Canadian broker and there will be a Broker fee about $500.00 not sure of the amount but they,ll will do all the paper work for you there no way around that, you need to have a bill of sale and a clear ownership title , only big cost would be is at your end in the US when you change the title into your name you pay i think it 7% sales tax's and depend what State your in.

Why do you need a Canadian broker to bring a US made car back to the states. Would think all you need is to prove you bought & own it.

Our Canadian Titles are called ownership this car you bought could have Bank Liens or whatever liens on this car you bought, in the States you would want a clear Title on a car you buy right, that's what a Broker will do for you when crossing the border and other things they want from the seller and buyer if there a shipper involved more paper work .
