This thread is for the painters out there. I was trying to repair a bobo I did in painting my "62". While trying to sand out a clear coat run, I got into the paint and down to the primer. I have sanded the area and feather edged the clear back away from the paint and the exposed primer. How the problem is - when I go to put the base coat on over the repair area, the paint goes on like it should but when it hits the sanded clear edge the base coat wants to wrinkle up along the clear edge. When I seen this happen I stopped what I was doing and let things dry for two hours, then went back and sanded the clear further back from the repair area and tried spraying again. Same problem again. So what do I do to stop this from happing, what am I doing wrong. The base coat is AXALTA Chromax chroma base K, and the clear is Nason Select clear 465-00. Thanks for any help that you painters can give me. One more thing, when the base coat lays on top of the clear further back from the edge it does not wrinkle up only on the edge of the clear.

Re: paint problem
Carl, you need to seal the edge of that basecoat with primer. Axalta is a pain if you have any exposed basecoat. We switched over to Diamont years ago because of the issue you are having right now. Blending that basecoat is not as easy as most other paints are. You can do it but you'll need to prime a larger area and then blend a larger area so the base is only over primer or clear coat. Base to Base will lift every time.- Top

Re: paint problem
Hello Philip, after talking to a paint friend of mine, he suggested doing the mist coats just like you have said in your post, but use a faster reducer. Something in the 60 degree temp range. With a faster reducer and doing 11 mist coats then 4 clear coats, problem solved. Buffed everything out and you can't even tell where the bobo was. Did not use any blender in this repair since it was a dark color, [ red ]. Thanks for your reply.- Top
