Re: Exterior/Interior Available Combinations, Codes, Quantities and Speculated % s

Mark, this pretty much mirrors my own attempts – though the addition of colors is fantastic!

Where this sort of calculation goes wrong is when you attempt to check the total production for both exterior and interior colors. If you add up the column units for black vinyl or leather you will get the totals indicated for that interior; likewise if you add all of the row units for both black and white exteriors you will get the totals indicated for those exteriors. Where it all falls apart is for the various combinations for the others.

For example, if you add up all of the interiors with Elkhart exterior you get 909 units, which is 187 units short of the total for the Elkhart exterior row (~17% unaccounted for). I tried taking this shortfall and apportioning it to the available colors (other than black and white) according to the production % for that interior which then corresponded to the total interior units but gave a non-matching total for the exterior! I ended up chasing my tail for a few hours trying different calculation methods to no avail.

I think the best way to look at these spreadsheets are to, as you mentioned, figure a range using +/- 10-20% to get about as close an estimate as we possibly could ever get.

It’s possible (but unlikely) some combinations were never ordered at all
That shouldn't be too difficult to determine given the number of cars on Google and the Corvette registries.

Your spreed sheets are missing the known cars built and painted in primer and not knowing what interior colors they would have gotten

          Owen,

I agree - hence the fallacy in trying to get exact numbers on all of this when production records are non-existent (or gone)...

One of the problems with any approach like this is how do you decide what are the independent and dependent variables ?
I chose exterior paint as the independent variable - calculating the dependent variable as interior color code...
My guess is if I flipped the 13 interior codes as the independent variable and made the 10 exterior codes we have interior data for dependent on that - the resulting numbers would be the opposite...perhaps 187 goes to -187 ? (but who orders are car and says it must have a vinyl/teal interior - and I don't care what the exterior color is ? )

the equations to do this are doable (tedious)...maybe if I get more bored than I am today, I'll try it

          thanks for you input !
          thx,
          Mark

I believe they are represented by the 10 unknowns in the bottom row of both spreadsheets. If you add up the stated exterior colors you are 10 short of the total '67 production figure - that's where I came up with that figure for my green spreadsheet.
