    Starter Numbers

See attached photo of my original starter for my 67 L79.

I understand the part number and the date code. I also understand the DELCO-REMY U.S.A.
What I don't understand is the 4 A on the third line. What does the 4 A signify?

    Don,
I'll be watching for an answer as I'd be interested in knowing, as well. My '67 L79 starter does not have that line on it. See pic below.

Not an expert but I believe designates production line of manufacture and is known to not always be stamped.

Interesting; wonder why some have it/some don't. Picture below is from

Not 100% sure but I believe this applies: From Chevrolet Product Identification Manual
" D. E. Housing (die cast) Female half of mold is identified by letter. Male half of mold identified by numbers."

Just confirmed in the TIM&JG...it is indeed production line...and shift.

That "A" in 4A on your example, appears to be a different font from "A" in "U.S.A." on your photo and those of Leif Anderson and Larry Evoskis examples.

If so, perhaps that might indicate application at a different time/location. Mark of a random inspection?

Edit: Keith answered your question while was typing. Begs the question though as why all don't have line and shift marks?
