Re: Castrol Dot 4 Brake Fluid - No Longer Available
Ray,
You should have zero issues using a different top shelf brand of DOT 4 to "re-bleed" your brakes. Think about it like gasoline...you can put Chevron on top of Shell on top of Exxon...no problems.Leif

Re: Castrol Dot 4 Brake Fluid - No Longer Available
As is the case with most automotive lubricants like engine, transmission, and axle oil, brake fluid is a generic product. DOT 3 and 4 are polyether glycol based and are both compatible with each other or any other "brand".
DOT 5 is silicone based and should not be mixed with DOT 3 and 4 due to DOT 5 not being miscible with 3 and 4.

I believe I've purchased Dot 4 at the Harley Dealer. You might want to check the Harley Davidson web site to see if it's still available.- Top

Duke,
Doesn't Dot 4 have a higher "boiling" temp than Dot 3 ?
I believe that's why I switched to it in my cars and bikes.- Top

Yes it does. And totally unnecessary for street driven cars (provided DOT 3 is acceptable for the brake system). Unless you drive down Pikes Peak regularly.

Not sure what is happening with Castrol because I used to buy Castrol LMA (low moisture absorption) brake fluid, but that is no longer available also.- Top

Re: Castrol Dot 4 Brake Fluid - No Longer Available
I don't see any brake fluids listed on Castrol's web site.
It appears they got out of the brake fluid business altogether.Vice-Chairman (West), Michigan Chapter NCRS

Yes, DOT 4 has higher dry and wet boiling points than DOT 3. I've also read in the past that DOT 4 may provide better corrosion protection to hydraulic system components. I recall the last brake flush I did on one of my cars was with Valvoline DOT 4, but I repeat, BRAND MAKES NO DIFFERENCE.
All DOT 4 (and DOT 3) is essentially the same regardless of the brand.

Well if you needed to bleed the system you might as well just flush it out with your new stuff. Crack open a couple beers and gravity bleed while your listening to some tunes and drinking a Miller.- Top
