    68 tachometer cable

What is the length of a OEM tachometer for a 1968 ? The one that is on my car is 32 inches and I ordered one from corvettecentral and it was 23 inches and the inner cable is too short, eckler show a 19 inch.

    Brandon------

The 1968 tachometer cable was unique to that year. That's because C3 Corvettes used a different length cable than C2 AND because 1968 was the only C3 that used threaded connections on BOTH ends of the cable.

The 1968 outer cable assembly was 19" in length. The inner cable was 20-1/2" in length.

Thanks do you know the best place to order one, the one from corvettecentral outer sheath is 25 inches from end to end of the nuts and the inner cable is 25 1/4 and is not long enough to go into the distributor . I might just have to order a inner cable to cut to length to get it to be long enough

What length cable are they going to make for you? Are they going to make it to some specs that they have for the 1968-0nly tach cable (which I provided above) or to some specs which you provided? I do not understand the statement that you made regarding a 23" cable being too short; it should be too long.

By the way, the length spec for the casing is measured from end-to-end of the casing EXCLUSIVE of the knurled nuts. The length of the inner cable is measured from end-to-end.

Below see a photo of an NOS GM #3937938 [not for sale] inner tachometer drive cable for a 1968-only Corvette application. As I mentioned above, GM specs this cable at 20-1/2". The actual length is 20-1/4" which is likely within GM's allowable tolerance. This cable was discontinued without supersession in 1981.

The one I ordered from speedometercableusa is suppose to be 201/2 inches which the guy said is what the specs shows , I think he was talking about the inner cable, maybe the outer case will be 19 inches. The one i got from corvette central outer case nut to nut is 25 inches and the inner cable measures 25 1/4 inches. Corvette central part number 212005 says it is 23 inches. The outer case is actually too long, but the inner cable is too short to go up into the distributor and turn the gear. When you bend the outer case at all it shortens the inner cable which barely extend past the nut that screws onto the distributor. The technician at cc said they have had problems before. When I get the one from speedometercableusa I will let you know how it does.
My odometer also had a worn out gear and I took it to D&M restorations in Greenville SC today and they repaired it while I waited and only took them about an hour. When I get my tachometer cable I will be able to put everything back together and be back on the road.

Joe the cable I got from speedometercablesusa was a lot better quality and was the right length and worked perfect. Thanks for telling me about speedometercablesusa.
