I’ve discovered that the heater box Y duct is MIA. They look a bit bulky and cumbersome to install behind the dash. Has anyone done an install from the passenger side by just removing the radio panel? Looks to be the most room. Hopeful on not removing the radio…again or worse, dash?

Re: Y Duct Question
Yes - I have removed and replaced it on my 64. I was installing a new speaker - removed passenger side panel, radio, speaker and then the Y duct - not difficult as long as you don't have fat hands and fingers. Suggest that you remove the passenger seat and put a towel over the console - tape it down with blue tape - to protect it from tools that will inevitably fall on it. Good time to freshen up the paint on our radio speaker grill too.Ed- Top

Re: Y Duct Question
Hello Paul,
Yes, there are 4 attaching points. Two on the left side, one facing aft, and one on the right into a fiberglass tab. You are correct in that these Y-ducts are the same part for both non-AC and AC heater boxes.
The Y-ducts aren't shown separately in the AIM for non-AC cars but rather as part of the entire unit. See UPC 1 ASM sheet D6 item 1 part #3838355 "Heater and Defroster Assembly." In the air conditioning section it is listed as an individual part. See UPC C60 sheet A2 item 4 part #3846156 "Distributor Assembly."
The aft most screw on the left side that attaches into the square metal tab is often located through an additional drilled hole. I've seen this modification so often that I wonder if this was done on the line or simply by a prior owner? And it's very common to find the right side fiberglass tab broken off as in these photos. I've posted one more pic of an undamaged one.
Good luck with your hunt for a nice one. Here's the photos of one that I feel is an unrestored survivor. Sorry for the pink hue. I grabbed these file photos long ago from eBay.
Mike

Re: Y Duct Question
Congrats Paul in locating a nice one so fast. For those of us who insist on correct mounting fasteners check out these closeups I made of the screw that attaches the aft facing side of the Y-duct. Luckily this one still has it's screw stuck in place with black putty. I've seen this ducting screw before. This one's got a blunt end. Take care. Mike
