    65 Carpet Installation

I'm finally to the point of installing new carpet in my '65 convertible. I bought the carpet at Corvettes at Carlisle several years ago because I got a great deal on it and it's been waiting patiently since then. When I was dry fitting the pieces yesterday, the pieces that fit over the wheel well (which after too many years to admit to, no longer have their molded shape) fit well, except that there is a great deal of material toward the front of the piece that I can't figure out. The forward edge is bound, and I can't see how or where it is supposed to fit, other than draping across the luggage stop and storage compartment. First picture is the passenger side; second picture is the driver's side.

Do not forget to make the front flaps for the two seats. Flap from outside to in to cover the seat bolts.

The rounded flap goes behind the luggage stop and down to the storage compartment.

Here are some shots of that area from our '65 Coupe. This is how I finished that area. Don't know if that's the correct way. Others will chime in.drvr side wheel-well carpet piece in storage well.jpgpsgr side wheel-well carpet piece in storage well.jpg

Thank you all for your replies. I especially appreciate the photos; they really help! The rounded flap was what was confusing me. Regrettably, the original carpet was long gone, so nothing to compare with. Should have it installed in the next day or two.

            Jim,
Again, thanks for your reply to my question. After seeing yours and others' replies, I went back and dry fit the wheel arch pieces again, and what I thought was clear, wasn't. By any chance, do you have any pictures of the rounded flap where it's supposed to go? My wheel arch pieces seem to have an awful lot of excess material, and I don't see where the bound edge should go. Thanks!65 new carpet 7.jpg

              Joel,
I think you need to rotate the carpet (clockwise) so that you can tuck the "ear" behind the luggage stop. Hard to explain, but study the picture of my '67 and note where the bound edge is vs the unfinished edge. I looked at Al Knoch's website to compare a '65 carpet set to a '67 carpet set and they appear very similar. Hopefully, you can see it in your minds eye.

Thank you, Leif. Seeing the bound edge in your photo helps clarify things a great deal!

                  Joel,
Here's a few pics from our '65. I think you can see how the finished edge of the carpet runs across the wheel well and then down behind the luggage stop. Inset is Leif's photo lightened a bit. Hope this helps a bit.

Thank you very much Dave. With yours and Leif's photos, I'm seeing how this is going to work. Now, to get out there and get it done!
