Spark plug wires with integral ground straps??

Just stumbled on something never knew about. page 440 of the 1969 AIM shows as part of radio shielding...spark plug wires that have integral ground straps that come out of the wire housing near valve covers to attach to valve cover bolts. Never heard of such a thing. Was that really how they came from the factory. Haven't explicitly looked for said wires but are they still out there today?

NVM...just saw them in Paragon catalog. Was planning to get new dated wires from Lectric. Presume they are the same. But would the ground be effective given aluminum valve covers??

And now I look closer and it is BB only...non issue for my L46

    Keith,
I believe the "ground wire" that you're seeing in the AIM U69, A09 is the shielding ground on the big block spark plug wires. I haven't had my first cup of coffee yet but take a closer look.

Yes, these are big block only items. Small blocks used common routing of the wires down the back of the block and under the exhaust manifolds. All of the wires were then covered with the hard metal shielding to keep the radio interference to a minimum. The big blocks couldn't run the wires that way because of the shape of the exhaust manifolds (and maybe other reasons) so the wires run over the top of the engine to the plugs. Hard housing shields would have been pretty difficult to create a good design, so each wire has its own braided shield that's grounded at each end.

Are these cables considered grounded or bonded like the radio antenna mount and exhaust pipes?

I guess by definition, they are bonded as carrying current isn't their intention. Each end is connected to the block – at the valve cover bolts and at the wire brackets by the distributor.

GM number for "shielded spark plug wires" ?
8912284 group number 2.239 from service parts div. Might be different from originals.
