        Leif, Please correct me but the retaining nut on the outside of the frame bracket in your picture looks like a crimped self locking nut and not a regular nut. Was #6 in the AIM picture a crimped nut?

          Tim,
          I see the hallmarks of a crimped self locking nut in the picture I posted, as well. When I rebuilt the cross shaft several years ago, I don't recall that nut as being a self locking nut. It came off and went back on just like a regular nut...no interference whatsoever. I know that a self locking nut will "lose" it's tension if reused several times but I don't know if this is the case with this nut. 15-20 years from now if and when I rebuild the cross shaft again, I'll let you know if the markings on the bolt indicate a self locking nut cuz I ain't gonna take it off to see

              Well at least the OP had "something" attaching the crosshaft. When I got to mine...it was just sitting in the slot with NOTHING holding it in place at the outboard end. Some Bubba previous owner felt that was good enough I guess....
