Re: Muncie Restoration
Jim, if you like to turn wrenches, I would consider doing it yourself. Last year when my M21 tried to destroy itself, I originally was going to have someone rebuild it. But as I started my research I realized I could probably do it myself. The only special tool I needed as a hydraulic press to separate 1st gear from the mainshaft.
It wound up being a very gratifying project. My 2 main resources were Paul at 5speeds.com and Auto Gear in Syracuse NY.1969 Riverside Gold Coupe, L71, 14,000 miles. Top Flight, 2 Star Bowtie.- Top

Re: Muncie Restoration
I agree they are not too bad to rebuild if that is an option for you. I hear part quality has dropped a lot since Covid hit and supplles and labor changed. As with most corvette parts, a lot sell the same thing that all come from a few sources. If the part quality is a real thing today that may be a concern for pro or amateur today. I am hearing of new gear sets failing.
Larry at D&L- NY
Jody Haag at Jody's in PA
Ed Hartnett- PA
Paul Cangelosi - FL
All places I bought parts from and all good people. I use Jody or Larry primarily but not because of any issues with Ed or Paul.
Transmission rebuilders are usually much more common locally than finding good diff, TA, or box rebuilders so I usually only rebuild trans that guys drive in, point being I haven't needed to buy new parts lately to see how they are.- Top

Re: Muncie Restoration
Ron,
We used Liberties for a Tremec build, paid extra for face plated gears and they never did the work, they billed for it. We only found it later and they didn't believe us until I sent pictures of the trans internals. They did correct it and it was a while but I am sorry I didn't pull the cover and check it when it came in.- Top

Re: Muncie Restoration
Gary,
Now you got my attention...What did you need to do to a Tremec that wasn't already done when it was manufactured?
Liberty seems ok now, was problematic when they moved...
Both are close by, and its only that the GM of tremec used to work for me that I could get their attention when playing in the 6 speed space...- Top

Re: Muncie Restoration
It was supposed to race prepped, the face plate takes the place of syncro's for hard, fast, shifts. There were other options as well. They just didn't do the work we paid for, an oversight and one I didn't catch for some time. In fact, the only reason we found it was the trans was pulled back out when the diff came out for a gear change. It worked fine but didn't have many miles on it over time. Given the fact they didn't do the work I thought they would have picked up shipping, at least one way, but they didn't. The trans came back and was sold, moving on from the TKO600 to a G Force 4 speed.- Top

Re: Muncie Restoration
Imagine droping a trans in one city and having it get caught up in the move... 40 miles to the other side of town. I would drop in before/after taking my son to soccer games to keep the pressure on. Not sure what has happened in last three years, if it got all normalized or not, but there was only one guy doing the Muncies, excellent work and help too, once I got it back.- Top

Re: Muncie Restoration
I rebuilt mine and it was much easier than I expected. Have a helper - the extra hands come in handy. I got the rebuild kit from Paul Cangelosi at 5speeds.com. He has videos available to walk you through process.- Top
