Thank you Bob! Finally I have a member of the "Clear when applied new" club. I've been preaching for years that there was no way it looked like that when they were new.

Well, I know Al Unser, who got VIN#2 of the '78 Pace Cars, always wondered how they could have done such a lousy paint job on a new car.

        My pleasure!

        You're not alone on this.
The late Mike Hanson thought the same.
Thinking back, 3M sold clear rubber cement back in the 70s..........which if used isn't still clear today.

This would be an interesting topic for some research. Since most all the TIM&JGs I looked at say it was yellow to yellowish brown, and since I could find very few adhesives for weatherstrip available today that are not yellow or black (some marine application silicone adhesives are clear or white), restoring a car to as delivered condition with a clear weatherstrip adhesive put on by a brush you can't see would be a challenge if the standard is changed.

That would be an interesting project BUT you will not see any examples on midyears still clear.
Reminds me of wood, blonde when cut but darker in a couple years if unfinished.
Same as clear paint on cars (or anything), it always yellows.
Somethings are not going to be the same as day one, regardless how well it was stored or how little it was driven.

I'd have to think the original glue was clear too. If that messy colored glue was on my brand new car I'd certainly complain.

Like my eyes before cataract surgery....

Lenses born clear, turned cloudy & yellow with age, restored to clear again with surgery.

I thought for years I had yellow whitewalls on my '59. After surgery they turned white!

A while back I recall someone on here ground the original GM spec sheet and manufacture for the glue. And I recall it was clear when new. But searching on here I can't find it.

How about those many people showing some pictures of non excessive application on original paint.
