    WCFB Idling and Leakage Concerns

I'm having difficulty maintaining a consistent idle RPM with my back WCFB on my 61 Vette. I have adjusted the air/idle mixture to 1/2 turn out from being fully seated, and the idle is smooth, but will drop from 1200 RPM to 600 RPM a minute after being driven. Also, and I know you guys are going to think I'm nuts, but there is a small amount oil puddling (not gas) on top of the front carb after a 20 minute run? I cannot figure out where its coming from. Has anyone ever experienced anything like this? Hey guys, thanks in advance for any help..........

Richard have you checked for proper choke operation? It sounds like the choke fast idle mechanism is affecting normal idle after cold start.

It could be other issues too but more details needed.

Do you have a Manual which outlines the WCFB operation and adjustments?

I have a copy of one but too big to upload. Send me a email via the msg system and I'll send it to you.

Re: WCFB Idling and Leakage Concerns

I disconnected the choke about a year ago (only use the car in warm weather, and don't like the engine racing at start-up). However I really appreciate your thoughts on the fast idle adjustment being the cause of my problem. How about if I disconnect the fast idle mechanism to prove that this is or is not the issue. Can I run the carb without the fast idle connected and, if so, what's the best way to disconnect it? Thanks a lot for your thoughts, as you really have my mind moving now!

Richard yes you can run without it, but you have to also tie the fast idle cam to prevent it from moving and to ensure the choke butterfly is fully open at all times.

The Fast idle cam is the one at the bottom of the choke rod, with the big slotted screw. It has to be held in a full Clockwise position to keep the cam off of the throttle lever cam tab.

Edit---- Alternatively, you could remove the cam completely by unscrewing the big slotted screw, but you still need to hold the butterfly open in some way.

My thought now is to remove the fast idle adjuster and the choke butterfly (its been disconnected for years) just to see if that's my problem. I have been fighting this erratic idle problem for a long time, and would sure like verify the root cause. Your thoughts? And thanks for the picture and your thoughts on resolving this issue.

I'd say yes you can do that, but removing the butterfly means you'd have to remove the small screws which IIRC are "staked" onto the shaft. I wouldn't recommend that.

I'd just tie it off at the cam as a quick test to see if that's the problem. A plastic tie wrap could be used, or even a small piece of wire.

Also, thinking about the oil puddle on top of the carb after you took off the air cleaner. That's likely from the oil cap breather.

Rich, if you are still watching this thread, I hope you got my message on the picture exchange. Regardless, you idea of the choke plate flapping around because it was not secured down by the fast idle mechanism appears to have really helped, as after tying the choke open my idle now stays between 700-900 RPM (which is considerably improved compared to a week ago). I have both the 61 Passenger Manual and the Corvette Servicing Guide, and now I just have to learn how to adjust my fast idle and choke mechanisms. Thanks again...................
