The texture is built into the material, so no worries.

Pay attention to where it's now black and where it's not.

Strip it with any stripper from the hardware store, tape off the areas to stay chrome, use a thin coat of self-etching primer to prime it, and if you're after black then use SEM Trim Black 39143 to paint it.
You can use a Q-tip with a TINY bit of lacquer thinner on it to smooth any edges if they have tape marks.

Done.

Lacquer thinner and 0000 steel wool will remove the paint and will not harm the chrome finish. The texture is imprinted in the metal. After getting the paint removed, wipe it down several times with thinner again. The original manufacturer never used a primer, just be sure it is clean. Mask it off, wipe again with thinner, and give it several light coats of SEMS Trim Black or Ktylon 1613 lacquer paint.

Does anyone know if there has been a recent article written or a thread posted written on how to restore a 4 speed shifter console for a 67 Corvette? I won’t be rechroming mine because the chrome is in great shape, but I’d like to freshen up the paint in the textured / grained part of the console.





I want to learn:

1. How to safely remove all the existing paint from the chrome surface WITHOUT also harming the chrome finish of the console?

2. What did you use to remove the paint?

3. Did you use a primer before applying the final trim color paint?

4. What did you do and which products did you use to restore a nicely painted textured/grained surface?




Please share your tips, suggestions, experiences, successes and mistakes, etc. Thanks in advance.
