Correct tab style '63 trailing arm shims retention?

    Hi,
My '63 is a January build, I understand that the attached found photo of the slotted shims with the tabs are correct for my car?

I have never seen this style installed, I did a search but no pics, what is the purpose of the tab and how are they retained so that they don't fall out?
I am familiar with the later two hole type, and of course C3 slotted style with the drilled pocket and long cotter pins for retention.

    Many thanks,
    Paul

From an April 20th car. Tighten the poop out of the bolt to keep them in. Then check on a regular basis.

Once the shim stack has been determined it should take light tapping with a small hammer to seat the last shim, which should be a thick one. Then push the tabs down to the point where they contact the bottom edge of the frame window and tighten the nut to the recommended torque with the suspension at normal ride height.

If properly installed as as above the shims will NOT fall out. Lost shims are almost always the result of improper installation, primarily NOT having the slight interference fit as described above before torquing the nut

Periodically check that the shims have not moved, especially after any changes.

        Thanks guys, interesting!
Or; I could just lie and say my car was built later, then just use the two hole type and never worry about them again?

Yes, but then (unless you have the body off) you have to get the right stack thickness all together with holes perfectly aligned with the trailing arm thru-bolts !

NOT EASY and I had to do mine three times before I got good wheel alignment I was happy with.

In fact, IIRC the shop manual says something like "If you have trouble, pull the carpet back and drill an access hole for the inboard side of the trailing arm bolt..." you know you're in deep do-do when GM says "if you have trouble, blah, blah, blah "
          thx,
          Mark
