Adding a fusible link at starter

I want to add a 16 ga fusible link to the 12 ga wire at the starter for safety concerns. Current thoughts are:

Removing a few inches of the 12 ga wire from the harness wrapping and going back a couple inches and cutting off the terminal that connects to the solenoid and then connect the fusible link to that wire using a step down butt connector.

Now i'm unsure what to do with the extra 8 inches in length that the fusible link will add to that wire. Can I gently loop it back up the 12 ga wire and then back down to the original length and only tape it together at the end to provide some stability? I don't think that I should tape it tight to the 12 ga wire which might hinder the operation of the fusible link if it's ever required.

Is this the right way to do it?

Jerry best not to tape it to anything.

I'd put a marine service "spring" loop. After made up and before it's attached to Sol+, use a #1 screwdriver and wrap the link around it to make a spring. Then attach to Sol+.

Thanks Rich. I wasn't familiar with that procedure.
Your knowledge and help are greatly appreciated as always.

When you loop it just try not to stretch it. Just use you thumb and index index finger to wrap it around the screwdriver shaft so you don't break the internal conductor.

I used this method years ago when I added a fusible link to my '59. After I installed a new Engine harness I opted for the 30Amp fuse at the ammeter instead.
