Re: 72 LT1 condenser on coil?
Hi John,
The P/N for your cap on the coil should be able to be determined in the U69 (Radio) option section at the end of the AIM. My 1970 AIM indicates P/N 1947452. Now, this cap connects to the POSITIVE (+) coil terminal. Its job is to suppress RF energy given off by the coil back thru the vehicle's electrical wiring. Without it, you may hear the annoying ignition pulsing on AM radio stations. Not to be confused by the capacitor that is used inside the distributor to suppress the back EMF that would otherwise cause the points to arc as they open up and cause the point contacts to prematurely "burn" from the arc energy.
If the vehicle did NOT come with a radio, then no external capacitor and no ignition wiring shielding would have been installed.Bill Bertelli
