1970 Rear Window Stowage Tray Rattles

The rear window stowage tray rattles while driving this 1970 coupe. I believe the front corners hit the underside of the deck when driving over a bump. I can push the front corners up by hand an inch or so before they hit the deck.

Ideas for fixing this? From the photo you can see the press board is warped, with the corners sagging down. I'm open to how to restore its shape, or just preventing it from rattling in the shape it's in. Foam cushions?

The good news is this in one of the last squeaks and rattles to chase down on this car.

Mark my 72 has rubber bumpers at corners. Not sure about 70.

      Hi Mark,
I used the bumpers from Dr Rebuild.

I just used some electrical tape to cover the contact points that were generating the noise.

            Mark,

I have an early '70 (00504) that have 3 rubber bumpers in the tray. The middle bumper is slighlty larger than then the two end bumpers. Also, the have different p/n's. Go to corvette central, p/n 483056 to see what the bumpers look like. They do not look like Dr Rebuild's at all, good luck.

Re: 1970 Rear Window Stowage Tray Rattles

Bob and Paul- I looked at the underside of my car's rear deck, and there are three patches about 1" square that look like the remnants of adhesive... probably where these cushions once existed.

Gary- I looked and discovered my stowage tray has three small unused holes, one on each forward corner and one centered on the front side, which look to be about the right size for the CC tray bumpers. Below is a screenshot from their product page that shows two bumpers, not three. I called them and they said they do not sell the center cushion. Since you said it was different, can you post a photo?

Edward- Does your '72 have cushions like Doc Rebuild or CC or both? How many holes does your tray have?

This suggests these cars are equipped with three under deck cushions AND three stowage tray bumpers. I wonder if this configuration varies between press board and plastic trays. If anyone can confirm, please post.

I also wrap my rear window in a cotton bath towel when removed and stored and leave it in the storage tray when not in use and it seem to mute and insulate a lot of the rattles. Paul

Thanks Paul. Since my tray is warped, I haven't used it to stow the window. My issue is the tray rattles when empty.

I found three locations, that had remnants of adhesive possibly from the previous bumpers on my 1970. The window tray, also has the three holes.IMG_1100.jpgIMG_1101.jpg

I put a double or triple layer of towel all along the front side except where it latched to prevent contact. Mine also was warped some and I forced it a bit in the areas that were low. My hinge screws came loose on me also and I lock tightened them up . Paul

Good idea. Placing a towel on the empty tray may help.

Has anyone successfully straightened a press board tray? Steam? Heat gun? Weights? I want to avoid causing damage while trying to straighten it.

To the rear window tray experts-
Let us know if there are two or three cushions on the tray and if the middle cushion is different. Also, are the press board and plastic trays different?
