Can anyone provide me with either a GM PART NUMBER or a cross reference Muncie part number so I can purchase one tomorrow from either NAPA or one of the other auto store suppliers. Thank you, Jack J.

GM #3831705 was discontinued in August, 1995 and replaced by GM #10140562. However, the latter was discontinued without supercession several years ago.

I do not know of an aftermarket source for a side cover gasket alone. However, they are easily available in gasket sets which include all transmission gaskets. The Fel-Pro part number is TS6238. The US Standard Gear part number is ZMGAS29755. These gasket sets cost in the range of $10-25. Even if a single side cover gasket were available separately it would likely cost $5-10 so the gasket set would be the way to go. Just about any auto parts dealer ought to be able to order the Fel-Pro set. I doubt that very many, if any, auto parts stores will stock these gasket sets as Muncie 4 speed transmissions have been gone for almost 50 years.

Good story, Jack. And, good advice too. If I'm in need of a part, I have a tendency to buy more than one (how many more would just show the level of OCD I've achieved :-O). In the case of the Muncie side cover gasket, making a 'template' for future use is a great idea.
